POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Tax Accountant (Fuel Excise/Sales) to join our Finance team. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate and timely compliance with complex federal, state, and local tax requirements across multiple jurisdictions. In addition to managing a high volume of recurring tax filings, this position will support key operational accounting functions, collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams, and contribute to process improvements. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership of their work, and is motivated to solve problems and improve processes within a dynamic and growing organization. The Tax Accountant is responsible for managing multi-jurisdictional tax compliance, supporting operations accounting processes, and collaborating across teams to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and regulatory adherence in a fast-paced environment. This full-time position is based in Onalaska, WI and typical work schedule includes Monday through Friday, daytime hours.
Responsibilities also include:
Prepare, review, and file federal, state, and local indirect tax returns including excise, sales, fuel taxes, and credits across multiple jurisdictions Monitor and coordinate responses to federal and state indirect tax notices or audits Support tax accruals, journal entries, and reconciliation of tax-related accounts Manage business licenses, renewals, and regulatory registrations across jurisdictions Monitor regulatory requirements (e.g., fuel reporting, environmental fees, excise programs) and ensure filings are completed accurately Process and review tax-related transactions such as orders on hold, adjustments, and invoice approvals Assist with financial reporting inputs related to inventory, tax, and fuel activity Conduct ad hoc research to tax, regulatory, and operational questions Collaborate cross-functionally with accounting, trading, and operations teams to ensure data accuracy Identify opportunities to streamline tax and operational processes

Bachelor's degree with two (2) or more years of tax or accounting experience Proficient in MS Office, Word, Excel and Outlook required Prior tax experience required; Indirect Tax experience a plus Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new software, platforms, and internal digital systems Capable of researching complex indirect tax rules efficiently and effectively Ability to communicate effectively; verbally and in writing Strong problem-solving skills, basic accounting principles knowledge, documentation skills, research and resolution skills, data analysis and multi-tasking skills, and emphasis on accuracy and timeliness
