Role Purpose The Freelance Bookkeeper / Assistant Accountant will support the firm's accounting, bookkeeping, taxation and advisory services by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing management accounts, assisting with statutory accounts, and ensuring clients meet their financial reporting and compliance obligations. The successful candidate will work closely with senior accountants, auditors and Directors, providing support across a diverse portfolio of clients ranging from sole traders and small businesses to larger companies and regulated entities. This role offers an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop a long-term career within a growing accountancy and advisory practice. Key Responsibilities Bookkeeping & Accounting Maintain accurate bookkeeping records using cloud-based accounting software. Process sales invoices, purchase invoices, bank transactions and journals. Perform bank, supplier and customer reconciliations. Prepare VAT/GST returns and assist with other indirect tax filings where required. Maintain fixed asset registers and accounting schedules. Payroll & Compliance Process payroll accurately and on time. Assist with pension and employee-related statutory reporting where applicable. Maintain an understanding of Guernsey Revenue Service requirements and filing deadlines. Ensure accounting records are maintained in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements. Team Support Work closely with accountants and auditors on client assignments. Assist with audit preparation by producing reconciliations and supporting documentation. Support the implementation of efficient accounting processes and internal procedures. Continue developing technical knowledge through training and professional development. Essential Skills, Experience & Qualifications Minimum of 2 years' bookkeeping or assistant accounting experience, preferably within a small accountancy practice. Good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping principles. Experience preparing management accounts and maintaining accounting records. Working knowledge of accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or similar cloud-based systems. Good understanding of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office. Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple client assignments and meet deadlines. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. A proactive and professional approach to client service. Reasonable knowledge of AI productivity tools and modern digital accounting systems. Desirable Experience Previous experience working within a Guernsey accountancy practice. Knowledge of Guernsey Revenue Service requirements and local tax compliance. Experience preparing VAT/GST returns and payroll. Exposure to trust, fiduciary or regulated businesses. Experience assisting with statutory accounts and audit assignments. Studying towards AAT, ACCA, ACA or another recognised accounting qualification. Formal Qualifications (Indicative) AAT qualified or studying towards completion. ACCA, ACA or equivalent professional qualification (part-qualified or studying). Alternatively, relevant practical bookkeeping and accounting experience will be considered.
