POSITION PURPOSE
Responsible for coordinating and directing day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, fixed asset, and cost accounting. Prepares reports, reviews and reconciles data, and participates in the development of specialized financial data. Researches and resolves discrepancies. Oversees and prepares entries and adjustments to credit union records, files, and statements. Directs, trains, supervises, and appraises personnel. Performs duties of accounting personnel as needed. Keeps management well-informed of area activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
Assumes responsibility for the effective performance of accounting department functions in assigned areas. Ensures accounting functions and duties are accurately and promptly completed. Ensures smooth workflow by establishing effective schedules and balanced distribution of work. Prepares journal entries and balances work in more complicated accounting areas. Oversees account reconciliation and balancing. Researches and resolves accounting errors and discrepancies. Follows-up to ensure corrections are recorded. Assists with budget preparations and financial analyses. Prepares regular reports and statements for management. Ensures accounting functions are completed in accordance with established procedures and applicable regulations. Recommends changes to procedures when warranted. Effectively supervises Accounting personnel, ensuring optimal performance. Provides leadership to personnel through effective objective goal setting, delegation, and communication. Demonstrates compassionate leadership and teamwork. Trains and directs accounting staff. Ensures personnel are well-informed of policies and procedures. Provides support as needed. Conducts performance appraisals as required. Gives useful, motivating feedback and discusses areas needing improvement. Formulates and implements corrective actions as needed. Ensures appropriate use of credit union resources by Accounting personnel. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective business relations with staff members, vendors, governmental agencies, and outside business and accounting professionals. Responds to questions and problems politely and promptly. Ensures outside contacts are properly informed. Ensures the credit union's professional reputation is projected and maintained by executing its brand standards. Assumes responsibility for maintaining effective communication and coordination with credit union personnel and with management. Assists area personnel and related departments as needed. Maintains regular contact with other departments to obtain information and/or to correct transactions. Maintains accurate and organized records. Submits reports on time. Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems or concerns. Attends and participates in meetings as required. Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned. Stays informed of developments in the accounting field and of changing governmental and legal requirements. Stays informed on matters involving effective leadership strategies. Completes special projects as assigned. Ensures Accounting Department work areas are clean, secure, and well maintained. Maintains appropriate levels of confidentiality.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification :
Bachelor's degree in accounting or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Required Knowledge :
Knowledge of accounting concepts, practices, procedures, and financial reports. Understanding of related regulations, statutes, and filing requirements. Knowledge of related computer applications.
Experience Required :
Three or more years of accounting and related supervisory experience preferred.
Skills/Abilities :
Ability to train and supervise others. Well-organized and detail oriented. Able to meet deadlines and manage projects. Proficient in 10-key and computer operations. Strong analytical skills. Strong problem-solving skills. Excellent oral communication skills. Able to keep accurate and complete records. Ability to prioritize work.
