Job Description

About the Firm Walters & Associates, CPAs is a Top 500 firm. Our audit practice covers a wide range of organizations, from community banks and not-for-profits to condominium associations, contractors, manufacturers, and privately held companies, along with around 50 employee benefit plan audits each year. We are a practical firm. We expect good work, we explain why things are done the way they are, and we give new team members real responsibility early. Our Culture We run the firm on a written set of 32 Fundamentals. Several of them come up every day in audit work: speak straight, pay attention to the details, practice blameless problem-solving, be a lifelong learner, and keep things fun. We would rather fix a problem than look for someone to blame, and we expect careful work and honest communication. The Role This is an entry-level position in our Sarasota office for someone who wants to build a career in audit. Most of your time will go to financial statement audits and reviews on teams led by our audit managers, covering a range of clients and industries. You will also help on 401(k) plan audits working with the team members who manage our benefit plan practice. You will learn the work by doing it, and senior team members and managers will review what you prepare and walk you through their comments. What You Will Do Perform fieldwork on financial statement audits, testing balances and transactions in areas such as cash, receivables, payables, revenue, expenses, and payroll. Help with audit planning, including gathering background on the client and pulling together preliminary analytics. Document and test internal controls. Prepare and send confirmations and track the responses. Request, track, and organize client documents and follow up on open items. Prepare clear workpapers that a reviewer can follow without having to ask you what you meant. Help draft financial statements and footnote disclosures. Work across a variety of engagements, which may include community banks, not-for-profit organizations and churches, condominium and homeowners' associations, construction companies, senior living communities, manufacturers and distributors, and HUD-assisted housing. Help on reviews and agreed-upon procedures engagements as well as full audits. Assist on employee benefit plan audits, including 401(k), profit sharing, 403(b), and pension plans, testing contributions, distributions, loans, and participant data. Raise questions early when something does not tie out or does not make sense. What We Are Looking For A completed bachelor's or master's degree in accounting. This position is open for an immediate start. What We Offer Direct work on real engagements from the start, with regular review and feedback. Support for the CPA exam. Paid continuing education. Paid time off of 10 days in your first year, growing with service (rising to 14 days by year five), accrued through the year. Eight paid holidays, including Christmas Eve. Additional paid time off between Christmas and New Year's. Lunch provided on Fridays. Health insurance, with the firm paying 50% of the employee-only premium. Dental and vision coverage are also available. 401(k) plan with a 4% firm matching contribution after one year of service. How to Apply Send a resume and unofficial transcript to Doug Walters, CPA, at doug@waltersaccounting.com. Tell us briefly why you are interested in audit.
