Job Description
Vaco is hiring for a Coding Supervisor in Jacksonville, Florida. This is a direct hire opportunity with a hybrid work environment. Position Summary The Coding Department Supervisor is responsible for leading the daily operations, quality assurance, and performance of the coding team within a high-volume physician practice. This role ensures accurate, compliant, and timely coding of professional services, with a strong emphasis on Evaluation & Management (E&M) and orthopaedic surgery coding. The Supervisor serves as a key liaison between providers, coders, auditors, and revenue cycle leadership to optimize reimbursement, reduce denials, and ensure audit readiness. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of certified coders.
- Monitor coding productivity, quality, and turnaround times.
- Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and ongoing training.
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and retention of coding staff. Coding Quality & Compliance
- Ensure accurate assignment of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and modifiers.
- Oversee E&M leveling accuracy, including MDM and time-based coding.
- Review orthopaedic surgical coding for accuracy (bundling, global periods, modifiers).
- Maintain compliance with payer guidelines, CMS regulations, and internal policies.
- Partner with internal and external auditors on coding reviews and audits. Provider Collaboration & Education
- Educate physicians and APPs on documentation requirements.
- Provide feedback on coding opportunities and documentation gaps.
- Support initiatives to improve documentation quality and reduce audit risk. Revenue Cycle Integration
- Collaborate with billing, AR follow-up, and denial teams to resolve coding-related issues.
- Identify trends in denials, downcoding, and underpayments.
- Implement process improvements to enhance charge capture and reduce revenue leakage. Reporting & Analytics
- Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs): o Coding accuracy and productivity o E&M utilization trends vs benchmarks o Denial rates and root causes o Audit findings and risk areas
- Present actionable insights to leadership. Qualifications Required
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or equivalent (CCS-P preferred)
- Minimum 5+ years of professional coding experience
- Minimum 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience
- Strong knowledge of: o
CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS
coding systems o E&M guidelines and documentation requirements o Surgical coding and modifier usage o NCCI edits and payer policies (Medicare, commercial, WC)- Experience with EMR/PM systems Preferred
- Orthopaedic surgery coding experience strongly preferred
