Duties
As a Revenue Auditor 2:
We are seeking a detail oriented, numbers person who enjoys complex analysis and technical writing to join our team of professional tax auditors as a Revenue Auditor 2 or Revenue Auditor 2 In-Training.
Our Revenue Auditor's excel in a regulatory environment where they have both the responsibility and authority to address issues of tax compliance. They enjoy knowing what they do is vital to ensuring the tax dollars critical to our state's budget are collected, funding key programs and services throughout the State of Washington.
In this role, you work with a variety of businesses, ensuring they understand the tax laws applicable to their business and accurately remit their tax liability to the state. You travel throughout a designated region meeting with businesses to observe and understand how they operate, evaluate their activities and accounting records, and provide education on tax laws and compliance. You formulate the best approach to conduct an efficient audit, conduct research to understand nexus to Washington sales, determine compliance with tax laws, and prepare audits by creating Excel workbooks using advanced functions.
This is a diverse role where you work independently, traveling as needed and receiving per diem reimbursement for your expenses. You are also part of a collaborative team where you receive training, share ideas and information, and ensure consistent interpretation and application of law. You may also conduct team audits to manage large, complex audits and ensure you are exposed to a wide variety of businesses including manufacturers, financial institutions, contractors, health care providers, retail chains, technology, telecommunications, airlines, transportation, and petroleum companies.
As a Revenue Auditor 2 In-training (In-training level is at Revenue Auditor 1):
For those hired in-training, you will complete a two year training plan that includes three weeks of new auditor training classes designed to give you a foundation of the knowledge you will need to be successful. You will participate in training audits with senior auditors who will teach you auditing standards, processes, and techniques. They will show you how to conduct audits and document your findings and provide support as you begin to independently conduct audits. You will also get involved in team audits to enhance your ability to conduct a broad range of audits at all levels of size and complexity. Once you have acquired the field experience and demonstrated your knowledge, you will advance to the professional level.
Qualifications
Depending on experience level, successful candidates may be hired as a Revenue Auditor 2 In-training, or as a Revenue Auditor 2.
The required qualifications are key competencies that have been successfully demonstrated through experience or education. To join our team, you must possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies:
Demonstrated ability to independently conduct audits:
Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive audits of small to mid-sized businesses, including retrieving and reviewing financial records, reconciling accounting data, and determining tax compliance using established auditing methods and accounting principles.
Proven ability to analyze complex financial data and systems:
Proven ability to assess taxpayer accounting systems, internal controls, source documents, and electronically obtained data; identify audit risk; conduct advanced statistical and non-statistical sampling; and draw accurate conclusions regarding tax liability in accordance with Washington excise tax laws.
Progressive experience applying state tax laws, rules, and policies: Progressive experience conducting research, interpreting federal and state tax laws and administrative rules, and applying findings to resolve complex tax issues, provide taxpayer guidance, and support audit determinations or appeal responses.
Demonstrated skill in written and verbal communication: Demonstrated skill in preparing clear, well-organized, and technically accurate audit reports, schedules, and correspondence; and communicating audit processes, findings, and tax implications in terms understandable to taxpayers, representatives, and business owners in both in-person and virtual settings. Proven ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple assignments: Proven ability to manage multiple audits and competing deadlines, adjust work plans based on audit progress, and maintain productivity in a changing work environment that includes onsite work at taxpayer locations and independent travel.
Demonstrated ability to provide taxpayer education and non-enforcement assistance: Demonstrated ability to educate and advise taxpayers and representatives on taxability, reporting requirements, and business activities through consultations, outreach, and responses to taxpayer inquiries.
Demonstrated investigative and problem-solving skills: Demonstrated ability to identify potential non-compliance, evaluate evidence related to tax discovery investigations, and apply appropriate penalties when warranted, using sound judgment and analytical reasoning. Proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders under general direction: Proven ability to build effective working relationships with taxpayers, representatives, team members, and internal specialists while working with general direction; adapt communication and interpersonal approaches to varied audiences; and maintain professionalism in challenging or sensitive situations. Demonstrated proficiency with auditing and accounting software, Excel, and data analysis tools: Demonstrated ability to extract, convert, analyze, and evaluate electronic accounting data using Excel functions, audit-specific software, and other analytical tools to validate data integrity and support audit decision-making. Progressive experience contributing to team learning and organizational effectiveness: Progressive experience supporting organizational initiatives by training entry-level auditors, participating in committees, and sharing knowledge, while applying an equity

Demonstrated professional experience in the above (required) competencies.
Four or more years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, tax compliance, or tax administration.
A bachelor's degree in accounting.
24 semester or 36 quarter hours of college-level accounting.
