  • This position offers a $2,500 signing bonus for eligible candidates
  • The Local Audit and Finance Division (LAFD) plays a critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and strong financial management across Michigan's local governmental units (LGUs).
In accordance with Public Act 2 of 1968 (PA 2), Federal and State statutes, and established professional accounting and auditing standards, LAFD is responsible for developing and maintaining uniform accounting and reporting formats for counties, cities, townships, villages, and other governmental entities. Additionally, PA 2 and Public Act 71 of 1919 authorize the division to conduct audits of LGUs when specific statutory criteria are met. We seek a candidate who is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and committed to public service to serve as a recognized resource within our Audit Section.
The successful candidate will:
  • Lead the development, revision, and implementation of audit and accounting policies.
  • Create, update, and maintain audit guidance, accounting manuals, and standardized forms and instructions for use by Michigan LGUs and their auditors.
  • Provide expert interpretation of audit and accounting standards as they apply to local government reporting.
  • Assist in shaping and enhancing internal policies and procedures to support the effectiveness and consistency of the Audit Section.
  • Contribute to advancing uniformity, compliance, and best practices across local governmental financial reporting statewide.
The preferred candidate brings strong technical expertise, sound professional judgment, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly to diverse stakeholders. This role provides a unique opportunity to support Michigan's local governments and strengthen financial transparency across the state.
PLEASE NOTE
New Hires for the Auditor classification will receive a one-time signing bonus of $2,500. The bonus will be paid out as $1,250 gross pay adjustment on the employee's first pay warrant and the remaining $1,250 will be paid upon completion of one year (2,080 hours) of satisfactory service. Required Education and Experience Education Possession of a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in accounting.

A position is considered professional if the job requires a bachelor's degree. Qualifying 'professional experience' is only taken into consideration post-bachelor's degree. Experience Three years of professional experience auditing accounting, financial, and operations records equivalent to an Auditor, including one year equivalent to an Auditor P11. Alternate Education and Experience Alternate Education and Experience - Auditor 12 Possession of a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in one or a combination of the following: finance, economics, information systems, business analytics, data analytics, statistics, quantitative methods, data science, or management may be substituted for the education for agency positions responsible for internal auditing or Office of Auditor General positions responsible for auditing. Possession of a Certified Internal Auditor certification or a Certified Information System Auditor certification may be substituted for one year of experience at the P11 level for positions responsible for internal auditing. Possession of a Certified Management Accountant certification (CMA) may be substituted for six months of experience at the P11 level. Possession of a Certified Public Accountant certification (CPA) may be substituted for one year of Auditor experience. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position prior to being appointed to the position. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed. Remote Work. This position is eligible for remote work up to five days per week, with monthly in-person meetings at the Austin Building in Lansing. Selected candidate must have a safe and appropriate designated workspace or workstation for performance of work and secure and sufficient internet access of commercial cable or wireless broadband with minimum speeds of 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. Please note that occasional onsite work will be required. Remote work arrangements are subject to management approval and may be adjusted or discontinued at any time. E-Verify.
