The City of Phoenix is seeking a highly skilled, detail-driven Tax Auditor with the analytical insight to ensure accuracy, compliance, and fiscal integrity in the Finance department. The Tax Auditor position is responsible for analyzing and auditing accounting books and records of businesses to determine compliance with transaction privilege (sales) and use tax for the State of Arizona and all local jurisdictions. This is an entry-level position that will receive extensive training from a lead Auditor, direct Supervisor, or Audit Manager.
Responsibilities include:
Interpreting laws and regulations to determine compliance with the Arizona Revised Statutes and Model City Tax Code. Providing education and assistance to Taxpayers on the requirements of the State & City Tax Code. Performing audits in accordance with General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), and State & City Tax Law Communicating in person and virtually with Taxpayer and their representatives. The successful candidate portrays a willingness to collaborate to find the best solutions, uses their ingenuity and judgement in the audit process, takes the initiative to research businesses to obtain possible audit leads, and is discreet in their findings. Upon supervisory and department head approval, this position may work remotely up to 3 days per week.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Understanding of tax laws and regulations to determine compliance. Arizona Revised Statute Title 42 tax law knowledge. Model City Tax Code tax knowledge. Ability to learn job-related material primarily through training and observation to effectively perform job duties. Possess strong analytical skills and have intermediate level of Microsoft Excel and Word skills. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards and Procedures. Possess effective oral and written communication skills. Proficient understanding of accounting books and records.
SALARY Pay Range:
$71,240 to $95,451 annually.
Hiring Range:
$71,240 to $74,796.80 annually.
Pay Range Explanation:
Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification. Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
Internal Only:
Please understand that this is pay grade 054. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance. Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase. Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease. Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade. When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in accounting and auditing work. Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus: Experience interpreting Arizona Revised Statutes Title 42 and Model City Tax Code. Experience with Transaction Privilege and Use Tax auditing. Experience with Accounting and Bookkeeping. Experience in effectively communicating through public speaking, written reports and presentations. GAAP Accounting Theory & Practices Experience. Experience with GAAS Accounting Principles. Experience providing education and assistance to customers. Experience interpreting laws and regulations to determine compliance. Experience using computer databases and spreadsheet software. Experience in conducting investigations and interviews. Proficient experience using Microsoft Excel programs. Experience in providing quality customer service.
