Job Description

Supports financial operations of the college and/or its component units by applying a working and expanding knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) chart of accounts, performing complex accounting work including preparing and analyzing records and reports, maintaining databases, processing positive pay, entering requestions, preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries to support month-end and year-end close. Works with other departments and external vendors providing customer service and answering questions. Completes the escheats process including bulk mailings of notice letters, collecting affidavits, and providing customer service to external customers. Prepares assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries and bank transfers. 2. Prepares monthly internal reporting and analysis and provides interpretation of results, as appropriate. 3. Performs completeness checks and prepares correcting entries to ensure proper recording of financial transactions. 4. Interacts and consults with administration in other departments across the college to resolve issues and assist with interpretation of financial data. 5. Administers positive pay process for various bank accounts. 6. Monitors activity in assigned accounts; reviews specified accounts for accuracy. 7. Enters departmental purchase requisitions. 8. Tracks utilities including recording and projecting expenses. 9. Creates and maintains departmental accounting procedure documents as needed. 10. Responsible for maintaining the journal entry inventory by ensuring receipt of backup as well as completeness. 11. Supports accounting functions for college component units, as needed. 12. Collaborates on the escheats process including bulk mailings of notice letters, collecting affidavits, and providing customer service to external customers in compliance with North Carolina regulations 13. Adheres to state and college and/or component unit accounting procedures, and appropriate internal controls. 14. Participates in cross training to serve as back-up for duties of other departmental staff accountants. 15. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Associate Degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or closely related field and 2 years of related work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • General knowledge of Accounting Principles
  • Experience with Ellucian Colleague
  • Experience in Higher Education
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in
Accounting or Business Administration Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics:
  • Advanced analytical and detail-oriented skills
  • Knowledge of GAAP
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in using an administrative information system, preferably Ellucian Colleague
  • Moderate to advanced computer and excel spreadsheet skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on the ability to communicate financial information
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments, adapting to changing priorities and situations, and follow-through on completion of assignments
Working Conditions:
Typical office environment, frequently listening to and talking with faculty and other staff members either in person, by telephone, or other collaboration or communication platforms; frequently sitting at a desk or workstation using a computer display, keyboard, and mouse.
