Submission deadline is 5 p.m. (EDT) on Monday, May 25, 2026. The City of Kettering's Finance Department is recruiting to fill the full-time position of Finance Technician I-Accounting. This position performs detailed technical work in accordance with established City and departmental policies and procedures and governmental accounting rules. The Finance Technician I-Accounting must demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn and execute increasingly difficult assignments while working in a fast-paced environment. This position classification is in the Non-competitive Classified Civil Service and works under the general supervision of the Finance management-level staff.
Qualifications:
The Finance Technician I-Accounting position serves as the primary customer-facing contact in the Finance office, assisting City staff members and the general public with various inquiries and payment processing. The position performs data entry to record cash receipts, ensures accurate general ledger coding and appropriate supporting documentation is obtained. The position classifies receipts and expenditures according to standing accounting classifications, processes travel requests in accordance with established policies and practices and works directly with the City's travel agent to review statements for appropriate travel charges and resolves disputes. Other duties include maintains listing of city-owned parcels, coordinates approvals and purchase requisitions for semi-annual county property tax payments. This position must have a strong working knowledge of accounting methods, terminology, principles and procedures. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with outside vendors, the public and City staff are required. A degree in Accounting or a related field is preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and training which demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform increasingly complex accounting work in the governmental environment. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Applies principles and practices of accounting to perform various technical, accounting, and record keeping duties related to the City's Finance operation. Provides support to departments citywide with regard to receivables, payables, petty cash, travel requests, and other Finance matters, ensuring compliance with applicable policies and procedures.

The Finance Technician I-Accounting performs detailed technical work in accordance with established City and departmental policies and procedures and governmental accounting rules. The Finance Technician I-Accounting must demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn and execute increasingly difficult assignments while working in a fast-paced environment. This position classification is in the Noncompetitive Classified Civil Service and works under the general supervision of the Finance management-level staff. All Finance staff is expected to be creative, foster the use of technology, and use initiative and professional judgment in the accomplishment of duties. Examples of Duties
EXAMPLES OF WORK
(Illustrative Only) Serves as the primary customer-facing contact in the Finance office, assisting City staff members and the general public with various inquiries and payment processing; Performs data entry into the City's ERP system to record daily cash receipts, ensuring accurate general ledger coding and appropriate supporting documentation is obtained; Processes and verifies invoice to certify accuracy and completeness, including appropriate approvals and reports; Classifies receipts and expenditures according to standard accounting classifications; Answers phone calls from other City departments and the general public to assist with finance-related matters; Processes travel requests in accordance with established policies and practices, ensuring all requirements are met prior to disbursement of funds; Works directly with the City's travel agent to review statements for appropriate travel charges and resolves disputes; Controls petty cash disbursements and maintains records; Maintains checkbook for payments to Fraze Pavilion alcohol vendor; Analyzes general ledger data to calculate and prepare monthly assessment reports for filing with the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards; Reconciles cash receipts for city-owned property sold at auction (GovDeals or similar), identifies fixed assets classification and ensures proper general ledger coding; Prepares and/or facilitates periodic invoicing for various City receivables including the issuance and follow up of appropriate correspondence for delinquent accounts; Maintains listing of city-owned parcels; coordinates approvals and purchase requisitions for semi-annual county property tax payments; Coordinates and confirms compliance with Purchasing staff for contract invoices subject to prevailing wage laws prior to payment; Assists with special projects as needed; Performs other technical work related to the City's accounting function; Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff members, volunteers and the general public; Regular and predictable on-site attendance required. Typical Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The Finance Technician I-Accounting must have a strong working knowledge of accounting methods, terminology, principles and procedures. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to deal effectively with the general public and City staff are required. The Finance Technician I- Accounting position requires technical aptitude of the principles and practices relating to accounting along with the ability to apply this knowledge to work products. Must be highly skilled in the use of computers and related software programs. The Finance Technician I-Accounting is an integral member of the Finance team and must be a self-starter, requiring minimal supervision to complete assigned tasks.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
General accounting experience and background is required. A degree in Accounting or a related field is preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and training which demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform increasingly complex accounting work in the governmental environment.
