Nature and Scope This position is under the general supervision of the Directing Pastor and is responsible for the careful and efficient stewardship of church finances. The person assuming this position will be sympathetic to and uphold the mission of St. John's UMC, the Illinois Great Rivers Conference, the United Methodist Church as a whole, and the Christian Faith. Duties and Responsibilities Manage day to day accounting operations to include: Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts using CDM software; journal entries; perform bank reconciliation with direct supervision of the church treasurer; prepare year-end reports (W-2.
W-3. 1096, 1099
); help prepare quarterly financial reports; communicate as needed with the Treasurer and Financial Secretary. Process vendor invoices as approved by appropriate church leadership to include Conference Apportionments and Debentures; reconcile credit card statement Process bi-weekly payroll; manage payroll tax filings and related reporting to include quarterly tax reports, and employee leave tracking Maintain employee payroll records and respond to payroll inquiries. Manage Accounts Receivable to include entries from online donations and Treasurer Donation Reports. Assist with preparation of ministry team financial reports as needed. Work Schedule Hybrid position - mostly in-person work that allows for some remote work for specific bookkeeping functions 15 hours / week Attend weekly staff meetings (remote option available) to facilitate strong communication & collaboration The PTO schedule shall be in accordance with the Church personnel policy. It is the responsibility of this position to keep the Senior Pastor informed of any leave plans. Working Relationship This position is under the general supervision of the Directing Pastor in coordination with the Staff Parish Committee. The Directing Pastor, in conjunction with the Staff-Parish Committee (SPRC), determines employment. Candidate will be reliable, detail oriented, organized and punctual for in-person requirements; able to take direction and relate to people in a pleasant manner; and have ability to take personal initiative and to work creatively without supervision. Compensation is recommended by the Directing Pastor and the SPRC and is approved by the Administrative Council. Evaluation of this position will be prepared annually by the Directing Pastor and discussed with SPRC.
Skills & Qualifications Education:
Bachelor Degree in Accounting is preferred or equivalent experience in accounting or database programs. Ability to work with computers (MS Word, Excel, email, Google Suite); ability to communicate well, both orally and written. Team player, excellent customer service skills, reliable and punctual
