Job Description

The Compliance Manager is responsible for ensuring NSALA's shelter operations comply with all applicable animal welfare laws, regulations, licensing requirements, and operational standards. This role serves as the organization's compliance lead, partnering with multiple departments to promote animal welfare, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented compliance professional with strong operational and relationship-management skills who can balance regulatory oversight with hands-on support in a fast-paced animal welfare environment. They are highly organized, proactive, data-driven, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of care for animals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage regulatory compliance, licensing, permits, and Department of Agriculture requirements. Oversee compliance training for employees and volunteers, including administration of the Litmos Learning Management System. Develop, update, and maintain shelter policies, procedures, and operational protocols. Conduct compliance audits, facility inspections, and document findings. Monitor animal welfare standards, including housing, enrichment, exercise, feeding, weight tracking, and length-of-stay management. Collaborate with Medical, Behavioral, Rescue, Admittance, Facilities, and HR teams to ensure compliance across operations. Maintain training records, compliance documentation, and regulatory reporting. Support shelter operations during weekends, holidays, special events, and foster home compliance visits as needed.
Requirements:
Minimum 3 years of management experience in compliance, animal welfare, shelter operations, or a related field. Strong project management, organizational, and analytical skills. Experience working with data, reports, and spreadsheets. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in animal sheltering, rescue organizations, nonprofit operations, or regulatory compliance. Knowledge of animal welfare laws and industry best practices. Passion for animal welfare and the mission of NSALA. Collaborative, team-oriented approach.
Salary:
