Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking a detail-oriented, business-minded In-House Counsel to lead and support legal and compliance initiatives across Adult Empire's internet retail operations. This role serves as a core legal resource for the business, responsible for both day-to-day legal support and ensuring the company adheres to all applicable laws and regulations related to adult content, e-commerce, data privacy, consumer protection, and digital marketing practices. The ideal candidate will proactively identify risk, develop compliance frameworks, and partner cross-functionally to support sustainable growth. Beyond compliance, this role will take ownership of a broad range of in-house counsel responsibilities, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts with vendors, partners, and service providers, advising internal teams on legal matters arising from business operations, maintaining and updating standard agreement templates, and supporting dispute resolution and risk mitigation efforts as they arise. As Adult Empire continues to expand its global footprint, this role will play an active part in our internationalization efforts. While prior international legal experience is a plus, we welcome candidates who are eager to develop expertise in cross-border regulatory requirements, international data privacy frameworks, and jurisdiction-specific compliance obligations. Key Responsibilities Age Verification Compliance Develop, implement, and oversee age verification processes to ensure compliance with laws governing age-restricted products and services (adult content). Monitor evolving regulations related to online age verification and digital identity requirements. Advise product, engineering, and marketing teams on compliant age-gating mechanisms and user experience considerations. Conduct audits and risk assessments of age verification systems and third-party vendors. Regulatory Compliance Monitor and interpret laws and regulations affecting e-commerce, including consumer protection, advertising, and online sales. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and international regulations where applicable. Data Privacy & Security Advise on data protection laws such as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act, and other applicable frameworks. Partner with IT and security teams to maintain privacy-by-design principles. Policy Development Draft, review, and update internal compliance policies, procedures, and training materials. Develop and enforce codes of conduct and ethical standards. Work with HR and the Director of Operations on handbook policies. Contract Review & Risk Management Review vendor, supplier, and third-party agreements with a focus on compliance and liability. Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with online retail operations. Marketing & Advertising Compliance Provide legal guidance on promotions, partnerships, and digital advertising. Ensure compliance with guidelines from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Training & Awareness Conduct compliance training for employees across departments. Promote a culture of compliance and ethical business practices. Internal Investigations & Audits Support internal audits and investigations related to compliance issues. Respond to regulatory inquiries and manage external audits. Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school Active bar membership in good standing 4-8+ years of legal experience, preferably in-house or with a focus on e-commerce, retail, or technology Strong knowledge of data privacy, consumer protection, and digital commerce regulations Experience working with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment Key Skills Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to translate legal requirements into practical business solutions High level of integrity and professional judgment Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills Preferred Qualifications Experience in internet retail or digital marketplace environments Familiarity with international compliance requirements Background in cybersecurity or data governance Knowledge of international compliance laws Compensation & Benefits PTO Paid Holidays Employer-sponsored health and dental insurance for employees and family (no paycheck deductions) Affordable vision insurance Hybrid WFH and Office schedule AFLAC personal insurance plans 401K after a year Paid parental leave Tuition reimbursement Charitable matching
