Director of Finance and Accounting
DescriptionOur client is looking for an experienced finance leader to oversee accounting and financial strategy for their organization located in-person in Columbia, Maryland. This role will guide budgeting, reporting, compliance, and internal controls while providing clear analysis to support sound business decisions. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting knowledge, operational leadership, and the ability to manage a broad range of financial responsibilities with accuracy and independence.

Responsibilities
- Lead the full scope of finance and accounting activities, including payables, receivables, cash oversight, and ongoing financial administration
- Prepare timely monthly and interim financial statements and translate results into meaningful performance insights for leadership
- Manage the general ledger and supporting records, ensuring documentation is organized, accurate, and aligned with accepted accounting standards
- Develop and maintain schedules related to deferred revenue and debt obligations, including required quarterly and annual calculations and reporting
- Oversee tax-related filings such as payroll and property tax submissions, while coordinating completion of federal tax reporting
- Direct month-end and year-end closing activities, reconcile financial data across systems, and strengthen internal control practices
- Coordinate internal audit activity and serve as the primary lead for the annual external financial statement audit process
- Build the annual operating budget, establish timelines, and present budget assumptions and results to organizational leadership
- Support specialized regulatory reporting, including Medicare cost reporting, and maintain required documentation for compliance purposes
- Maintain departmental policies and procedures, administer commercial insurance matters, and provide backup guidance for payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field is required
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and demonstrated experience applying accounting principles in a leadership capacity
- Proven background in budgeting, financial reporting, general ledger management, and month-end close processes
- Experience handling deferred revenue, debt service schedules, tax filings, and audit coordination
- Solid computer proficiency with the ability to work effectively across financial systems and reporting tools
- High level of accuracy, sound judgment, and the ability to manage priorities independently with limited supervision
- Clear English communication skills with the ability to work effectively with leadership, staff, and residents.
