Accounting Domain Expert - Product SME Remote - U.S. (EST or CST) Contract Position Summary Our client is seeking an experienced Accounting Domain Expert / Product Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support a software platform built specifically for accounting and bookkeeping firms. This is a unique opportunity for an accounting professional who understands how firms actually operate and can apply that expertise within a software product environment. The ideal candidate will have deep hands-on accounting knowledge combined with direct experience in an accounting or bookkeeping firm, particularly around time and billing, WIP, engagement management, realization, invoicing, collections, and financial reconciliation. You will work closely with Product, Engineering, and QA to ensure financial calculations, workflows, and reporting are accurate and meet professional accounting standards. Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain test scenarios covering the complete financial workflow, including time capture, WIP, invoicing, AR aging, payments, credits, adjustments, write-offs, retainers/trust, and GL exports.
- Investigate customer-reported balance discrepancies and determine whether issues originate from data, system calculations, or workflow expectations.
- Review calculations involving fixed-fee and progress billing, realization, write-downs, sales tax, and period close.
- Translate accounting requirements into clear acceptance criteria for Product, Engineering, and QA teams.
- Participate in product refinement and design reviews as the accounting subject matter expert.
- Identify potential issues involving double-entry accounting, financial integrity, and real-world firm workflows before features are released.
- Validate and sign off on product changes involving billing, payments, WIP, trust/retainers, and financial reporting.
- Work directly within the application, spreadsheets, and data exports to create edge cases and independently verify balances and calculations.
- Develop documentation of transaction flows and expected accounting treatment.
- Create reusable datasets and regression scenarios for ongoing product testing.
- Provide accounting-focused training and guidance to Product, Support, Engineering, and QA teams.
- Participate in customer calls to help diagnose accounting and workflow-related issues.
- Provide insight into accounting-industry practices, customer expectations, and competitive product capabilities.
