Lead and develop a collaborative team, oversee financial operations, ensure policy compliance, analyze performance, and drive process improvements. Serve as a trusted resource to the university while helping deliver accurate, efficient, and exceptional service. Under the direction of the Accounting Manager, the Assistant Manager position will oversee the planning and coordination of departmental functions to maintain effective and efficient operations. It provides managerial leadership to departmental staff enabling the unit to be a valuable resource to the university by using knowledge and appropriate application of policy to advise and guide others. This position also elevates the knowledge base of department and university faculty/staff utilizing various training, touch points and resource mechanisms. In addition to supervising, scheduling, and prioritizing/assigning work tasks and projects, the position interviews, recommends employment, trains and evaluates support staff, ensuring staff success through coaching and effective leadership. Work Modality This position requires regular on-campus presence at least twice per week. Other on-campus presence is required when assigned duties or operational needs necessitate it. Remote work arrangements may be approved in consultation with the supervisor. Salary Expectations Salary is commensurate with experience. What You'll Do Operational Oversight & Compliance Oversee and coordinate departmental functions to maintain effective and efficient operations. Monitor the audit and processing of transactional documents to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to university policies, procedures, and guidelines. Identify and resolve operational issues and ensure departmental services consistently meet established standards of excellence. Serve as an escalation point for complex transactions, policy interpretation, and customer service matters. Staff Leadership & Performance Management Provide leadership and supervision to departmental staff. Plan and prioritize workloads, establish staff schedules and assignments, and allocate resources to support departmental priorities and efficient workflow. Interview and recommend candidates for employment; onboard, train, coach, and evaluate staff. Conduct required performance evaluations and provide timely feedback, recognition, and opportunities for professional development. Foster staff success, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning. Reporting, Analysis & Process Improvement Develop reports and analyze departmental metrics and data for regular and ad hoc reporting to the Accounting Manager. Monitor trends and operational performance to identify opportunities for increased efficiency, accuracy, and service. Advise and assist with the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives, including changes to procedures, workflows, controls, and departmental resources. Education, Training & University Support Serve as a knowledgeable resource to university faculty and staff on departmental processes, policies, and a wide variety of related topics. Assist in developing, revising, and delivering educational content and resources for university audiences. Provide training and engagement through multiple platforms, including in-person and virtual training sessions, consultations, communications, and other resource mechanisms. Minimum Requirements Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business, Accounting, Finance or a related field with relevant course work in information technology; three to five years of progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in accounting, auditing, management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired Qualifications Experience with KFS (Kuali Financial System) and Concur Travel System. Knowledge of MSU policies and procedures. Experience with, and ability to interpret and apply, policies, procedures, and practices in decision making scenarios. Demonstrated success utilizing elevated communication skills resulting in positive customer interactions with an audience of varying levels of knowledge and understanding. Experience supervising, developing and evaluating staff. Experience developing and conducting in person and virtual training/informational sessions to audiences of various sizes and experience levels.
