Job Description

Accounting Manager Reports to:

Staff Accountant Mission Cardinal Newman High School A Catholic college, preparatory community Educating students in the wholeness of body, mind, and soul Consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church Manifested by faith, leadership, and service Position Summary The Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the monthly close process, maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, preparing and reviewing reconciliations, and supporting accurate and timely financial reporting. This role serves as a key member of the Business Office and works closely with the Controller to ensure that financial activity is properly recorded, reviewed, documented, and ready for internal reporting and audit purposes. This position is well suited for a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys owning the close process, improving workflows, supporting internal controls, and working in a small-team environment. The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, deadline-driven, and able to balance hands-on accounting work with review, analysis, and process improvement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Monthly Close and General Ledger
  • Own and manage the monthly close calendar and checklist.
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries, including payroll, tuition activity, cash receipts, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, investments, and other recurring entries.
  • Review general ledger activity for accuracy, completeness, and proper coding.
  • Identify unusual activity, missing entries, and necessary reclassifications before financial reports are finalized. Account Reconciliations
  • Prepare and/or review monthly bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Reconcile cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, payroll liabilities, deferred revenue, restricted funds, investment accounts, and other assigned accounts.
  • Research and resolve reconciling items in a timely manner.
  • Ensure reconciliation support is complete, accurate, and audit-ready. Financial Reporting and Budget Support
  • Assist the Controller with monthly financial statements and internal reporting packages.
  • Prepare budget-versus-actual reports and assist with variance analysis.
  • Support department-level financial reporting.
  • Assist with annual budget preparation, departmental budget monitoring, and financial analysis as assigned.
  • Help ensure financial reports are accurate, clear, and useful for management decision-making. Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Cash Activity
  • Review accounts payable coding, approvals, documentation, and cutoff.
  • Support proper recording of payroll entries, benefit deductions, payroll liabilities, and related reconciliations.
  • Review cash receipts, deposits, merchant activity, tuition remittances, and related journal entries.
  • Provide backup support for AP, payroll-related accounting, and cash receipt processes as needed.
  • Help strengthen workflows, documentation, and internal controls across AP, payroll, and cash processes. Audit, Compliance, and Documentation
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting workpapers.
  • Assist with year-end close and annual audit preparation.
  • Support compliance-related reporting, insurance audits, tax filings, and other required reporting as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate files and documentation in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Assist with updating and documenting accounting procedures, workflows, and internal controls. QualificationsEducation and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience managing or substantially supporting a monthly close process.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, independent school, educational, or mission-driven organization. Accounting Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, accrual accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Experience reviewing accounts payable, payroll entries, cash receipts, tuition activity, or similar business office workflows.
  • Experience with fund accounting, restricted funds, endowment accounting, or nonprofit accounting.
  • Ability to prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules. Systems and Technical Skills
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working with accounting systems and financial reports.
  • Ability to learn new systems and improve use of existing accounting tools.
  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Blackbaud Tuition Management, Blackbaud Financial Aid Management, or related systems preferred but not required. Professional Skills

Pay:
$95,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
