full-time We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the property accounting function and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting across a commercial real estate portfolio. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing property accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, tenant recoveries, AP/AR, collections, and accounting operations. The Controller will lead and develop a team that includes Assistant Controllers, Property Accountants, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Collections. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, proactive leader who combines strong technical accounting expertise with excellent people-management skills and a business-oriented mindset. This role will work closely with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to strengthen accounting processes, improve financial reporting, solve complex issues, and support strategic business decisions. Key Responsibilities Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, including review of financial statements, general ledger activity, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and supporting schedules. Ensure accurate, timely, and consistent financial reporting across the property portfolio. Oversee CAM and tenant recovery reconciliations , including billing adjustments, analysis, and dispute resolution. Lead the annual property budgeting process and support forecasting, variance analysis, and financial performance reporting. Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, general ledger accounting, and related processes. Establish and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, systems, and reporting processes to increase accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. Oversee property insurance certificates and coordinate information required for annual blanket policy renewals and workers' compensation audits. Manage property insurance claims and coordinate with insurance brokers, property management teams, and other stakeholders. Lead, coach, mentor, and develop the accounting team by setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, and fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration. Oversee accounting activities related to property acquisitions, dispositions, and management transitions. Coordinate accounting support and financial reporting for audits, tax preparation, ownership reporting, lender requirements, and other external stakeholders. Partner with Property Management and senior leadership to identify opportunities, resolve accounting issues, improve processes, and support informed business decisions. Identify opportunities to leverage AI and emerging technologies to streamline accounting workflows, enhance reporting, and improve decision-making. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 5 - 7+ years of progressive accounting experience , with increasing levels of responsibility. Proven experience leading, supervising, developing, and mentoring an accounting team. Commercial real estate, retail real estate, or property management accounting experience strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of property accounting, financial reporting, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, CAM reconciliations, tenant recoveries, and property budgeting. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with property management/accounting software. MRI experience strongly preferred; Avid experience is a plus. Demonstrated ability to strengthen internal controls, improve processes, solve complex problems, and manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to accuracy. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and levels of the organization. Demonstrated interest in and practical experience applying AI and emerging technologies to improve accounting processes and business outcomes.
