Summary:
We're partnering with a growing, owner-operated multifamily property management company in the MetroWest/Worcester, MA area to find an experienced Accounting Manager to lead day-to-day accounting operations and partner with finance leadership on cash management, reporting, and month-end close. This is a hands-on role for someone who knows AppFolio inside and out - you'll be the organization's go-to expert, driving process improvements and reporting efficiencies while mentoring a Staff Accountant and helping formalize accounting policies as the company scales. Ideal candidates bring 5+ years of progressive accounting experience (real estate or property management strongly preferred), multi-entity exposure, and hands-on AppFolio or similar property management software expertise. This direct-hire role offers close collaboration with ownership in a small, hands-on environment. What You'll Own Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, tenant billing, and collections across all entities. Supervise and support the Staff Accountant, including reviewing deliverables and resolving accounting issues. Manage cash balances, banking relationships, and account reconciliations. Execute weekly check runs and verify supporting documentation and approvals. Prepare monthly financial statements, variance analyses, and ownership reporting packages. Coordinate mortgage payments, loan schedules, escrow tracking, and lender reporting requirements. Manage real estate tax payments, regulatory filings, vendor compliance documentation, and corporate reporting obligations. Lead annual insurance audits, third-party audit support, management fee billings, and payroll reconciliations. Support budgeting and forecasting activities at the property level. Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Improve AppFolio reporting, workflows, automation, and system adoption. Contribute to special projects and broader finance initiatives as needed. Must-Haves Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience. Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, cash management, and financial reporting. Experience managing accounting activities across multiple entities or business units. Experience developing, documenting, or improving accounting policies and procedures. Proficiency with AppFolio or similar property management accounting software. Experience supporting monthly close and financial reporting processes. Nice to Have Real estate, multifamily, or property management accounting experience. Previous experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff. Experience with budgeting and forecasting activities. Exposure to lender reporting, escrow management, or mortgage administration. Experience leading process improvement or workflow automation initiatives.
