About Us Founded in the 1930s and proudly based in Westport, Massachusetts, Mid-City Scrap is one of New England's most established and trusted names in metal recycling. We provide comprehensive recycling services across the region, specializing in both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. About the Position The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing general accounting operations, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, and supporting financial decision-making through accurate reporting and analysis. This position includes supervision of staff, contributing to general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is a strong leader, detail-oriented, analytical, and capable of balancing multiple accounting tasks. Key Responsibilities Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Oversee Accounts Receivable process and cash application process. Including following up with customers to ensure timely payment of Invoices. Manage general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and accruals. Monitor and analyze inventory valuation of scrap metals and finished goods. Track and report on operational costs, including transportation, processing, and environmental compliance. Lead monthly reporting package consolidation and distribution to Leadership team. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations, including environmental reporting requirements. Coordinate with external auditors and support the annual audit process. Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets. Collaborate with accounting team, sales and the operations team to ensure accurate cost accounting and inventory tracking. Support ERP system improvements and automation of accounting processes.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred). 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in manufacturing, recycling, or commodities. Strong knowledge of GAAP and cost accounting principles. Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, ROM) and Microsoft Excel including advanced formulas, dynamic arrays, Pivot Tables, etc. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team. Working Conditions Work is performed in an industrial office environment with exposure to noise and dust. Requires sitting, typing, and computer work for extended periods.
