Job Description

GARNEY An Accounting Manager position is available at Garney. You will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of Garney's water and wastewater construction and manufacturing business. This position leads the accounting staff to ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial records, and maintains compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company accounting policies. The Accounting Manager works closely with the Financial Controller to support financial reporting, month-end and year-end close processes, audit readiness, budgeting, and forecasting activities.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
  • Oversee and manage daily accounting operations, potentially including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and general ledger maintenance, as applicable
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules are completed accurately and timely
  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial transactions prepared by accounting staff
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the general ledger and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Assist with the preparation and review of financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Utilize financial systems including Microsoft Office, Spectrum, Prophix, and Power BI to support reporting and data management
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company accounting policies, and applicable financial regulations
  • Coordinate audit preparation activities and serve as a key point of contact for external auditors
  • Maintain proper documentation and record retention practices for accounting transactions and financial records
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, internal controls, and data integrity processes
  • Recommend and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff through coaching, training, and performance feedback
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented team environment
  • Support employee development and succession planning initiatives within the accounting function
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new accounting personnel
  • Assist the Financial Controller with annual budgeting, financial forecasting, and variance analysis activities
  • Support financial reporting and analysis efforts to provide meaningful business insights
  • Collaborate with operational and financial stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely financial information
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting
  • Required
  • 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Required
  • Public accounting experience
  • Strongly Preferred
  • Experience in the construction industry, preferably water and wastewater or heavy civil construction
  • Preferred
  • CPA license or active CPA candidate status
  • Preferred
  • Experience with job costing and revenue recognition in a construction environment
  • Preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience with accounting systems such as Spectrum or similar ERP/accounting platforms
  • Familiarity with Prophix and Power BI preferred
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and develop team members effectively
  • Ability to work independently while fostering collaboration across departments
  • Strong professional judgment and decision-making skills
