Job Description

ABOUT THE COMPANY
We are a growing regional propane distribution company serving residential and commercial customers across Central Texas, generating approximately $10M
  • 20M in annual revenue with strong EBITDA. The business is entering a critical phase of operational and financial transformation
  • including an upcoming external audit, a new ERP system implementation, and future growth initiatives, including potential acquisitions.
The finance function is being rebuilt from the ground up under new CFO leadership. This is a rare opportunity to help design and own that foundation.
Location:
On-site, hybrid, and remote candidates are all considered. Candidates must be located (or willing to relocate) within the corridor between Brady, TX, Kerrville, TX, and Austin, TX.
THE OPPORTUNITY
This is not a typical accounting manager's role. You will be the #2 in the finance function-the person who makes the engine run while the CFO focuses on ERP, strategy, and growth. You'll build processes where none exits, clean up what needs cleaning, and establish the financial infrastructure a scaling business requires. If you've ever wanted to be the person who built the accounting function-not just maintained it
  • this is that role.
You'll have real ownership, direct CFO exposure, and a clear path to Controller as the company grows.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
Monthly Close & Financial Reporting Own the full month-end close process end-to-end
  • journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations Ensure accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and financial statements Hit a consistent 5-7 business day close cycle and improve over time Deliver reliable monthly financials to CFO and ownership Audit Readiness & Balance Sheet Integrity Lead preparation for external audit
  • own PBC schedules, supporting documentation, and tie-outs Clean up historical balance sheet accounts and establish ongoing integrity Address accounting issues proactively and document resolution Build and maintain internal controls appropriate for a growing business Day-to-Day Accounting Operations Oversee AP, AR, and cash processes (with support from accounting clerk and offshore team) Manage bank reconciliations and cash reporting Oversee inventory accounting•including propane inventory valuation, physical count reconciliation, and cost of goods tracking Supervise accounting clerk and coordinate with external or offshore bookkeeping support Maintain vendor and customer master data integrity Coordinate with Store managers and CSRs on billing and AR ERP Implementation Support Partner with CFO on new ERP system implementation•this is a major company initiative Lead data cleanup, chart of accounts design, and process mapping for migration Help establish scalable accounting workflows within the new platform Be a key voice in how the system is configured for accounting operations Process Building & Improvement Document accounting policies and procedures where none currently exist Identify and implement process improvements across AP, AR, cash, and close Build a close checklist and reporting calendar Create the foundation for a scalable finance function as the company grows
WHO YOU ARE
You're an experienced accounting professional who is more operator than technician. You don't wait to be told what needs fixing
  • you find it, own it, and solve it. You've run a close before, cleaned up messy books before, and supported an audit before. You're comfortable building structure in ambiguity and working directly with senior leadership. You Bring 4-8+ years of progressive accounting experience Hands-on experience owning or managing a monthly close process Prior audit support experience
  • public accounting background a strong plus Experience cleaning up or stabilizing a messy set of books Strong understanding of GAAP, account reconciliations, and financial statements Comfort managing or directing junior staff ERP experience or exposure to a system implementation
  • a significant plus Industry experience in distribution, logistics, energy, or similar
  • helpful but not required Inventory accounting experience (valuation, physical counts, COGS)
  • a plus given our propane distribution model Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred but not required You Are A builder, not just a maintainer
  • you improve systems, not just run them Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through Comfortable with ambiguity and able to create structure where little exists Able to operate independently while staying aligned with leadership prioities Direct, reliable, and accountable
  • you do what you say you'll do This Role May Not Be Right For You If You Have only AP/AR or transactional accounting experience Have never owned or managed a full, month-end close Need a highly defined role with established processes in place Are not comfortable working in a fast-paced, change-heavy environment
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE 30
Days Completed assessment of current books and open issues Built first close checklist Identified top 3 balance sheet risks Established working relationship with clerk and offshore team 60 Days First clean(er) month-end close completed on schedule Key accounts reconciled: cash, AR, AP, inventory Audit PBC groundwork underway Basic documentation started for core processes 90 Days Audit support execution fully owned — CFO reviews, not executes Reliable monthly financials delivered on time ERP data cleanup and COA work in progress 50-70% of CFO's accounting bandwidth freed for strategic work
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Base Salary $75,000
  • $95,000 depending on experience (Central Texas market rate) Bonus Discretionary annual performance bonus Benefits Health, dental, vision insurance | 401(k) plan PTO Paid time off + company holidays Growth Clear path to Controller as company scales — this is a build role, not a maintenance role
WHY THIS ROLE
You'll build something real — the accounting function doesn't exist yet in a meaningful way; you'll create it Direct access to CFO and ownership — your work will be visible and valued immediately ERP implementation involvement — a career-building experience few accounting roles offer Clear advancement path — this role is explicitly designed to grow into a Controller position Stable, profitable business — strong EBITDA, long-standing customer relationships, essential service
