JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Financial Reporting is responsible for planning, directing, and managing the University's financial reporting functions. This position ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records and reports, oversees the preparation of financial statements, coordinates annual audits, ensures compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and provides financial information and analysis to support institutional decision-making.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Direct and oversee the preparation of annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable governmental accounting standards. Coordinate the University's annual external audit and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional financial reporting requirements. Review and approve financial reports, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation. Monitor changes in accounting standards and reporting requirements and recommend appropriate implementation strategies. Develop, maintain, and evaluate internal controls related to financial reporting activities. Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes associated with financial reporting functions. Prepare and present financial analyses and reports for University leadership and governing entities. Coordinate the preparation and submission of required financial reports to governmental agencies, grantors, and other stakeholders. Collaborate with budget, accounting, payroll, grants, and other administrative units to ensure accurate financial reporting. Supervise assigned personnel, including assigning work, evaluating performance, and supporting professional development. Assist with financial planning and special projects as assigned. Maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel information.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and internal controls. Knowledge of governmental and higher education accounting practices. Ability to interpret and apply financial regulations, policies, and procedures. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Ability to prepare complex financial reports and present information effectively. Proficiency with financial management systems, spreadsheets, and reporting software. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, auditors, and external agencies. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position does have supervisory responsibility.
OTHER DUTIES
Participate in institutional committees and initiatives as assigned. Assist with policy and procedure development related to financial operations. Provide support during audits, reviews, and accreditation activities. Other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible accounting or financial reporting experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. Experience in higher education, governmental, or nonprofit accounting. Supervisory experience.
Licensing and Certifications:
CPA preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment. Position requires extensive computer use, attention to detail, and the ability to meet strict reporting deadlines. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required during audits, fiscal year-end activities, or special projects. Limited travel may be required for training, professional development, or business-related meetings. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States.
