A Claims Representative accepts and reviews applications for insurance and provides information to insurance agents. Assists insurance customers, answers questions and processes requests to change or cancel policies. May assist with insurance claims that are disputed, review claims and policy coverage and help to negotiate agreements between customers and an insurance company.
Under direction, advise veterans and their dependents of all rights and benefits to which they are entitled by law, and assist them in the development, preparation and submission of claims.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Veterans Services Representative class is distinguished by the responsibility to assist veterans and their dependents in identifying benefits that they may be eligible for and obtaining qualifying documentation. The class is distinguished from the class of Veterans Services Coordinator, by the latter's responsibility to make eligibility decisions on cases, act as the unit supervisor, and represent the department at meetings with community groups and organizations. Two years of college level coursework in Behavioral/Social Science, Public/Business Administration, or closely related field, and one year of experience that included interviewing or counseling and processing claims for benefits; OR, graduation from high school or possession of a GED and, two years of experience that included interviewing or counseling and processing claims for benefits; OR, honorable discharge from the military service and one year of experience that included interviewing or counseling and processing claims for benefits.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
Incumbents must obtain United States Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA) accreditation within one year of hire. A valid driver's license may be required at the time of appointment and employees may also be required to drive their own vehicle and provide proof of liability insurance as per Vehicle Code VC § 160020. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This position may require pre-employment drug test, physical examination, and fingerprinting for a background investigation.
