Summary:
Supports two primary care clinics by managing medication prior authorization (PA) processes. Serves as a liaison between providers, payers, pharmacies, and patients to ensure timely medication access. Works under pharmacist and/or clinic leadership to optimize medication access outcomes.
Major Responsibilities:
Complete and submit prior authorization requests for medications prescribed in primary care clinics Review patient charts and insurance requirements to gather necessary clinical documentation Prepare and submit PA forms via EHR, payer portals, and fax systems as required Track and follow up on submitted prior authorizations to ensure timely approvals or denials Communicate PA status updates to providers, nurses, and care teams in a timely manner Partner closely with embedded pharmacists (if applicable) for complex cases Communicate with payers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to obtain coverage details Coordinate appeals and resubmissions for denied authorizations as directed Identify formulary alternatives and escalate to pharmacists/providers when appropriate Maintain accurate documentation of all PA activity within the electronic health record Collaborate with clinic staff to resolve medication access barriers (coverage, cost, delays) Support urgent or high-priority requests to prevent interruptions in patient therapy Complies with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards. Keeps current with changes in the specialized field and collaborates with department leadership to adopt best practices. Maintains updated knowledge and skills and contributes to the education of others. Contributes positively to execution of pharmacy department initiatives Accepts assignments of tasks from other pharmacy teammate roles when workload dictates.
What You Will Need:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. For technicians in NC with validating technician responsibilities- an associate's degree in pharmacy technology is required per guidelines on PTCB. Registration/Licensure with state board of pharmacy per state of employment requirements. Certification through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (CPhT) or National Health Career Association (ExCPT) required. Nice to Have (Not Required): Experience with prior authorizations, insurance processing, or ambulatory pharmacy workflows preferred. Familiarity with Epic or similar EHR systems preferred. Strong understanding of insurance plans, formularies, and medication access processes. Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) preferred but not required. Key Skills Strong attention to detail and ability to manage high-volume workflows. Effective communication with interdisciplinary teams. Time management and prioritization across multiple clinics. Problem-solving skills related to medication access barriers. Ability to navigate payer systems and documentation requirements. Performance Focus Areas Turnaround time for PA submissions. Approval rate and appeal success rate. Timely communication with clinic teams. Reduction in delays to therapy initiation.
