AVP, Lower Middle Market Region Lead, Pacific North Job Description The Small & Lower Midmarket ("SLM") Region Lead is a high-impact leadership role responsible for driving core underwriting activities and production processes across a designated U.S. region through a team of 8 to 12 matrixed new business underwriters. Because this team has no renewal or mid-term servicing responsibilities, the ability to lead an effective new business revenue generation process is essential. This position reports to the SLM Segment Lead - West and has a matrixed reporting relationship to the Commercial Insurance (CI) Regional Lead. The role partners closely with regional CI leaders and Distribution to achieve budgeted new business growth targets. It requires strong underwriting expertise, relationship-building skills, and the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders at all levels. Close collaboration with Operations is also critical to ensure effective underwriting execution and workflow management. In addition, this role is accountable for audit performance, compliance results, underwriting authority delegation, and the review and coordination of above-authority referrals. The position also supports regional hiring efforts and plays a significant role in training, development, and talent management. Primary Responsibilities
  • Drive new business production across multiple branches and distribution sources.
  • Approve deals within assigned authority limits, ensuring timely and accurate decision-making.
  • Manage underwriter productivity, including coaching and mentoring on desk management skills for both generalist and specialty underwriters.
  • Analyze production, profitability, business mix, and underwriter productivity across industries, lines, and branches, and develop actions to improve results.
  • Collaborate with CI Field Underwriting and Distribution partners to develop and implement local market tactics.
  • Partner with Distribution on sales execution, agency management, and agency communications.
  • Ensure adherence to audit and compliance requirements, including self-audits for matrixed underwriters.
  • Contribute to talent management for matrixed staff, including performance assessments and compensation planning.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships at all levels, both internal and external.
  • Travel as needed.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and experience in commercial lines new business underwriting, along with the ability to operate effectively across multiple disciplines.
The following skills are required:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of commercial lines underwriting experience, including a strong working knowledge of multi-line and monoline product offerings.
  • Proven record of teamwork, leadership, and integrity in building and sustaining internal and external relationships to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to apply technical, analytical, and underwriting decision-making skills to coach and develop others effectively.
  • Demonstrated success in driving business results through producer and sales management skills.
  • Experience developing and executing business plans.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to deliver a clear and consistent message to customers, producers, employees, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to incorporate customer perspectives into business and profit strategies.
The pay range for the role is $125,000 to $175,000. The specific offer will depend on an applicant's skills and other factors.
