About this role The Dow Chemical Company has an opening for an Underwriter - Dorinco Reinsurance Company located at the company's World Headquarters in Midland, Michigan. In this position you will be responsible for assisting the Senior Treaty Underwriter with execution, analysis, management and monitoring of the Company's insurance subsidiaries' treaty reinsurance underwriting portfolio. You will serve as an additional market interface for treaty reinsurance business, as well as the key interface for all parent-related (Dow) underwriting, reporting to the Vice President of Operations of the Consolidated Insurance Subsidiaries. The Dow insurance subsidiaries participate in domestic reinsurance markets and work closely with Dow Corporate Risk Management to finance portions of Dow's fortuitous risks. They are domiciled and regulated in multiple states, have invested assets of more than $2.5 Billion, and are led by Dorinco Reinsurance Company holding an AM Best "A" rating with over $700 Million of revenue and $1.7B of admitted assets. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and apply your finance, analytical, and relationship management skills, as well as insurance industry experience to help manage and shape the insurance underwriting activities across a variety of property and casualty lines of business. Responsibilities At the ultimate direction of the Vice President of Insurance Operations, and in conjunction with the Senior Treaty Underwriter, assist in managing the execution of direct insurance and reinsurance business, collaborating on and incorporating comprehensive business plans to attain revenue and profitability objectives that align with Dorinco risk parameters, along with actively developing and implementing marketing and growth strategies. Evaluate, price, and structure reinsurance transactions across a diversified portfolio. Assess risk exposures, terms and conditions, and coverage structures to ensure profitability and alignment with risk appetite. Negotiate reinsurance placements with brokers and counterparties. Monitor portfolio performance, including loss trends, rate adequacy, and capital utilization. Collaborate with internal stakeholders (risk management, finance, legal) to create innovative program designs and execution. Maintain underwriting documentation, compliance, and governance standards. Build relationships with intermediaries and clients to ensure service excellence and promote Dorinco's solutions to drive profitable growth. Ideal candidates will have an outstanding track record of performance in reinsurance, insurance or relevant field. Prior experience in insurance or reinsurance underwriting is desirable. Other high performing individuals may be considered who have demonstrated the required characteristics and have experience in a related finance field, and/or career switchers who have displayed strong interest in, and commitment to, the field. Required Qualifications A minimum of a bachelor's degree in insurance, finance, risk management, actuarial science, accounting, or a related field or relevant military experience at or above a U.S. E5 or Canadian Petty Officer 2nd Class or Sergeant ranking. A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in insurance/reinsurance underwriting, marketing, or commercial insurance operations, and/or other relevant experience. A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree (in Business Administration or Insurance preferred).
Professional Insurance Designations such as:
Chartered Property/Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Reinsurance (Are), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Other Risk or Underwriting-related Designations. Previous experience in treaty reinsurance underwriting, marketing and commercial reinsurance operations.
Skills Risk Quantification & Financing:
Ability to analyze and quantify risk exposure and develop cost-effective risk financing strategies, including insurance and alternative risk transfer solutions, to support organizational resilience and financial performance.
Quantitative & Analytical Skills:
Strong ability to analyze complex data, apply statistical and logical reasoning, and translate insights into actionable recommendations to drive informed business decisions.
Project Management:
Proven ability to plan, manage, and execute projects by coordinating resources, managing timelines and budgets, mitigating risks, and effectively communicating with stakeholders to deliver successful outcomes.
Negotiations:
Ability to effectively structure and negotiate insurance terms, pricing, and coverage conditions with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders while balancing risk exposure and profitability objectives.
Collaboration:
Ability to work effectively with diverse teams, stakeholders, and functions to achieve shared goals. This includes communicating clearly, contributing ideas, valuing different perspectives, and building strong working relationships to drive successful outcomes.
