The Role:
Commercial Underwriter Location:
Virtual/Hybrid - Preferred you live in TX, MS, AR, OK, LA, AL, or MO. Owens Insurance Agency, located in Clinton, Mississippi, is an MGA/Broker specializing in surplus lines business. With over 50 years in operations, we write both commercial and personal lines property and casualty insurance in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Due to our continued growth, we are seeking to hire a Commercial Underwriter. As a growing MGA representing many well-known companies, including being a Lloyds of London cover holder, we are seeking an experienced commercial underwriter to evaluate, rate, or decline new business. The commercial underwriter will work closely with agents and company underwriters to ensure all policies are underwritten in the most efficient and effective manner while meeting service standards and following company guidelines.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  • Leads the daily triage of commercial new business submissions
  • Reviews submissions and interacts with producers to ensure all submissions are accurate and complete
  • Rates and quotes new business with in-house companies and outside brokers
  • Presents new business quotes to producers
  • Documents underwriting decisions within standards and expectations
  • Binds and issues policies within authority
  • Follows through after policy issuance with verifying required documents are provided timely to the company
  • Works with company underwriters to follow-up on inspection compliance and audit requirements
  • Prepares certificate of insurance and binders as needed What skills and qualifications do I need?
  • High-school diploma or equivalent and five (5) or more years of experience in the insurance industry.
  • Knowledge of lines of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines.
  • Experience underwriting garage related risks, including Garage Liability and Garage Keepers coverage is a plus, but not required.
  • Active Property & Casualty insurance license.
  • Understands the importance of meeting new business quoting and service deadlines.
  • You are a go-getter and are not afraid to learn something new.
  • Experience working with multiple computer systems a plus.
  • You have worked in a small office and are used to wearing multiple hats.
  • You are detail-oriented, resourceful, have a positive attitude, work easily in a fast-paced environment, can handle multiple projects, exercise sound judgement.
This is a full-time position with work hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The salary is negotiable and will depend on experience and capabilities. As a full-time employee, you will qualify for a competitive salary, a 401k retirement plan, PTO plan, and health, dental, vision, and other ancillary benefits. Must have the ability to work in the United States without Visa sponsorship.
