Job Description

Broome Cooperative Insurance Company is a regional property and casualty insurer serving upstate New York founded in 1887. We partner with independent insurance agents and pride ourselves on strong relationships, sound underwriting, and long-term stability. We are seeking an experienced Personal Lines Underwriter to support our growth while maintaining profitability and underwriting discipline. Broome Cooperative is rated "A" by A.M. Best. Position Summary The Personal Lines Underwriter is responsible for the evaluation, selection, and retention of new and existing business in accordance with company underwriting guidelines. This role requires a high level of technical expertise, sound judgment, and a commitment to consistent, high-quality results while delivering excellent service to our agency partners. Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and underwrite new and renewal personal lines business in accordance with company guidelines and risk appetite
  • Make sound underwriting decisions regarding acceptance, pricing, modification, cancellation, and non-renewal of policies
  • Perform account servicing including responding to agent inquiries, applications, quotations, endorsements, cancellations, and non-renewals
  • Review property inspections to assess risk and loss control needs
  • Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with independent agency partners to support company growth and profitability
  • Train newly appointed agencies on company products, underwriting guidelines, systems, and risk appetite
  • Market the company's products to prospective new agency partners
  • Maintain proper, thorough, and consistent underwriting documentation
  • Limited travel Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Minimum of high school degree required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 5+ years of Personal Lines underwriting experience required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with computer processing and data entry
  • Customer service oriented
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent analytical skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple accounts effectively
  • Commitment to accurate and consistent documentation
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, particularly with independent agents Pay and Benefits
