Personal Lines Underwriting Manager Location:
Detroit, MI (Hybrid) Overview Our Client is seeking an experienced Personal Lines Underwriting Manager to lead and scale their personal lines underwriting operation. This role is responsible for underwriting strategy, team leadership, portfolio performance, and alignment with growth and profitability objectives. The ideal candidate brings strong technical underwriting expertise, proven people leadership, and the ability to collaborate cross‑functionally in a specialty insurance environment. Key Responsibilities Lead, mentor, and develop a team of personal lines underwriters, fostering a high‑performance and collaborative culture Establish underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and best practices to support profitable growth Oversee day‑to‑day underwriting operations, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements Partner with product, actuarial, claims, compliance, and distribution teams to support product development and market expansion Monitor underwriting results, loss trends, and portfolio performance; recommend corrective actions as needed Manage agency relationships and underwriting support for key distribution partners Evaluate new business opportunities, program enhancements, and underwriting innovations Support operational improvements, including workflow optimization and technology adoption Ensure adherence to company underwriting philosophy and risk appetite Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field (or equivalent experience) 7+ years of personal lines underwriting experience, including leadership or management responsibility Strong technical knowledge of personal lines products and rating structures Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence outcomes, and drive accountability Experience working within specialty, E&S, or program insurance environments preferred Excellent analytical, communication, and decision‑making skills Professional insurance designations (CPCU, AINS, AU, or similar) are a plus What Sets This Role Apart Opportunity to shape underwriting strategy within a growing specialty platform High visibility role with meaningful impact on profitability and long‑term growth Collaborative, entrepreneurial environment valuing expertise and innovation Compensation & Benefits Our Client offers a competitive compensation package, including base salary, performance incentives, and a comprehensive benefits program.
