Full Job Description Position Overview:
Reviews and underwrites applications, renewals, endorsement requests, reinstatements and rewrites to appropriately evaluate, classify, and rate individuals and groups for insurance. Responsible for achieving the established customer service, profitability and efficient operation corporate goals by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintains customer service levels, profitability and efficient operations as outlined by underwriting measurements. These levels will be measured utilizing underwriting audits, workload reports, and agent surveys. Under direction and within authority, reviews and underwrites applications, renewals, endorsement requests, reinstatements and rewrites on an account basis and properly communicates with agents and insureds and documents files and properly closes out work per file. Identifies and reviews accounts that may require underwriting changes to enable profitability and initiates policy non-renewals and/or cancellations as needed. Identifies and reviews accounts that may qualify for an Individual Risk Premium Modification (IRPM) credit or those accounts that require Underwriting review for an Individual Risk Premium Modification (IRPM) debit to be applied to assist in making an account profitable. Performs processing responsibilities, to extent necessary for underwriting and maintaining an above average productivity level and quality. Maintains current knowledge of underwriting work flow, procedures, and systems changes and initiates positive suggestions for more effective and/or more efficient ways to underwrite and service business. Participates in company meetings and educational opportunities. Assists Product Development and IS with development and testing of various products/projects as directed. Works with Directors in the modification of underwriting standards as needed and monitors loss ratio per line of business and recommends changes to improve it. Performs underwriting training and assists as directed with advanced training. Performs underwriting audits and other duties as directed by supervisor as needed.
Education & Work Experience:
College degree and a minimum of five years of insurance experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior insurance experience is preferred.
Essential Competencies & Skills:
Strong written and verban communication skills. Ability to read and interpret procedure manuals, write routine reports and correspondence, and communicate effectively with customers and employees. Ability to calculate figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, and percentages. Working knowledge of internet software, spreadsheet applications, and word‑processing software. Ability to manage relationships and workload while maintaining consistent underwriting practices. Thorough understanding of underwriting and processing procedures. Able to work under pressure and shifting priorities to meet organizational goals.
Travel Requirements:
Occasional Travel. Physical Requirements Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods. Frequently operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator and copy machine and printer. Requires repetitive motion of the wrists, hands, and fingers for keyboarding, data entry, and handling paperwork. Must be able to exchange accurate information while communicating with others in person and over the telephone. Requires close visual acuity to read printed materials, view computer terminals, and analyze data.
Working Conditions:
Requires working indoors generally in environmentally controlled conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Job tasks may need to be performed in close proximity other people. Requires to be at work on-site during specified hours.
