Commercial Underwriter Location:
Spokane, Washington preferred | Hybrid flexibility Opportunity Overview A growing community-focused financial institution is expanding its commercial credit capabilities and building a more centralized underwriting function. The organization is seeking a Commercial Credit Analyst or Commercial Underwriter who can help evaluate commercial borrowing relationships, analyze financial performance, identify credit risk, and support high-quality lending decisions. The position can be calibrated to the experience of the individual hired. A developing analyst with strong fundamentals can grow into broader underwriting responsibility, while a more experienced candidate can immediately take ownership of new-money underwriting and more complex commercial credit analysis. This is an attractive opportunity for someone who wants to become a well-rounded commercial credit professional rather than remain limited to one narrow part of the underwriting process. What Makes This Opportunity Different Broad exposure across commercial lending rather than a narrowly siloed credit function Opportunity to participate in both new-money underwriting and portfolio management Direct interaction with experienced credit leadership Strong professional development and exposure to broader bank decision-making Opportunity to help build and shape a centralized underwriting model Collaborative community-banking environment Hybrid flexibility with preference for candidates who can maintain meaningful team interaction Ability to grow from credit analysis into more complete commercial underwriting responsibilities Exposure to multiple borrower, collateral, and transaction types Responsibilities Analyze commercial loan requests, renewals, modifications, and annual relationship reviews. Review business and personal financial statements, tax returns, projections, borrowing-base reports, and supporting financial information. Perform cash flow, global cash flow, debt-service coverage, leverage, liquidity, and trend analysis. Evaluate repayment sources, collateral, guarantor strength, covenant structure, and overall credit risk. Identify key strengths, weaknesses, risks, and appropriate mitigating factors. Spread business and personal financial information using established credit systems. Prepare clear and well-supported credit memoranda, underwriting narratives, and risk assessments. Support new-money underwriting as experience and capabilities allow. Monitor borrower performance, covenant compliance, approval conditions, and overall portfolio quality. Assist with annual reviews, renewals, risk ratings, modifications, and other portfolio-management activities. Work closely with commercial bankers to understand borrower operations and appropriately structure credit. Participate in borrower or prospect conversations when appropriate. Maintain complete documentation consistent with credit policy, regulatory requirements, and sound banking practices. Support loan review, examinations, audits, and other credit-related projects. Ideal Candidate Profile Approximately 2-5+ years of commercial banking, credit analysis, underwriting, portfolio management, accounting, or related financial-analysis experience. Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered. Demonstrated ability to analyze financial statements and business/personal tax returns. Working knowledge of cash flow, global cash flow, debt-service coverage, leverage, and liquidity analysis. Commercial underwriting or meaningful credit-analysis experience strongly preferred. C&I and/or commercial real estate experience preferred. Formal credit training is beneficial. Ability to move beyond spreading financials and explain what the numbers mean from a credit perspective. Strong analytical and written communication skills. Comfortable working collaboratively with lenders, credit professionals, and other stakeholders. Curious, adaptable, and interested in developing a broad understanding of commercial banking. Preferred Credit Experience The strongest candidates will have experience with some combination of: New-money commercial underwriting C&I lending Commercial real estate Equipment financing Annual reviews and renewals Business and personal guarantor analysis Collateral analysis Covenants and borrowing-base monitoring Appraisals and collateral due diligence Credit memorandum preparation Commercial portfolio management Candidates do not need to bring every capability on day one. The organization is willing to develop someone with a strong technical foundation and the ability to grow into increasingly sophisticated underwriting responsibilities. Not a Fit If You Want a role limited exclusively to financial spreading or data entry. Prefer an extremely narrow or highly siloed credit function. Are uncomfortable interpreting financial information and forming a credit conclusion. Prefer minimal interaction with lenders and other business partners. Need every responsibility to remain inside a rigidly defined box. Are not interested in developing broader commercial underwriting capabilities. Compensation Base compensation is expected to be approximately $81,000-$110,000 , depending on experience and demonstrated underwriting capability. The organization may consider compensation above the published range for candidates bringing more advanced commercial underwriting experience and the ability to independently handle complex or new-money credit opportunities. The position is also eligible for an annual incentive opportunity and a comprehensive benefits package that includes substantial paid time off, employer-supported medical coverage, employer-paid dental and vision coverage, retirement contributions, life and disability insurance, and paid parental leave.
