Job Description

Overview:
The Asset Based Lending Relationship Manager ("ABL RM") is responsible for originating, structuring, and managing asset-based lending relationships within the middle market, large corporate and sponsor-backed client segments. This role focuses on delivering customized working capital solutions supported by accounts receivable, inventory, and other collateral while managing risk and driving revenue growth. The ABL RM serves as the primary client contact for the ABL product, partnering closely with credit, underwriting, field exam, and portfolio management teams to deliver best-in-class financing solutions.
Primary Responsibilities:
Origination & Business Development Source new ABL opportunities across middle market, sponsor-backed and large corporate relationships through in house referrals and direct calling. Develop referral networks with private equity sponsors, investment bankers, CPA's, consultants, syndication desks and internal partners Structure and propose ABL facilities (revolving lines, term loans, FILOs, etc.) Lead deal execution from initial screening through approval and closing Relationship Management Serve as primary point of contact for the ABL product post-closing Maintain strong client engagement and proactively identify cross-sell opportunities Monitor performance trends, liquidity, and collateral coverage Manage renewals, amendments, and upsizing opportunities Credit & Structuring Partner with Credit to analyze financial performance, collateral quality, and liquidity drivers Structure borrowing base formulas, advance rates, and covenant packages Evaluate field exams, appraisals, and third-party reports Participate in credit memo development and approval presentations Risk Management & Portfolio Oversight Monitor borrowing base certificates, reporting compliance, and collateral trends Identify early warning signs and manage underperforming credits Coordinate with Workout/Special Assets where appropriate Ensure adherence to internal policies and regulatory requirements Internal Leadership & Collaboration Coordinate deal teams including underwriting, legal, and operations Mentor junior bankers and analysts where applicable Contribute to regional ABL strategy and pipeline development
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelors Degree Finance, Accounting, or related field or four years relevant experience. Minimum of seven years commercial portfolio management experience. Five years of experience in ABL, leveraged finance, or commercial banking Proven ability to originate and manage complex credit relationships Strong understanding of: Borrowing base mechanics (A/R, inventory, reserves) Collateral-driven underwriting Sponsor and leveraged transactions
Education and Experience Preferred:
Familiarity with field exams, appraisals, and liquidation scenarios Existing network of sponsor and intermediary relationships MBA or CFA (optional) Key Competencies Credit judgment and structuring expertise Strong client-facing and business development skills Negotiation and deal execution capabilities Ability to manage multiple transactions simultaneously Collaboration across credit, portfolio management, and operations Performance Metrics New loan production volume Portfolio revenue and return metrics Credit quality (risk rating migration, criticized assets) Client retention and cross-sell penetration Reporting Structure Reports to: Group Manager - ABL / Commercial Banking Works closely with: Credit / Underwriting Portfolio Management Field Exam & Collateral Monitoring Special Assets M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees.
