Overview:
Position Overview At Foundation Building Materials (FBM), the Director of Payroll is responsible for the strategic leadership, oversight, and execution of enterprise-wide payroll operations across the United States. This role establishes payroll strategy, ensures regulatory compliance, and drives process standardization, scalability, and continuous improvement. Reporting to senior leadership, the Director of Payroll exercises independent judgment and discretion in developing policies, managing risk, and leading a multi-level payroll organization. This role partners closely with Finance, HR, Legal, and IT to ensure payroll operations align with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and organizational growth.
Responsibilities and Qualifications:
Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Governance Establish and execute the overall payroll strategy, aligning operations with organizational goals and growth initiatives Develop, implement, and maintain payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure consistency and compliance Provide leadership and direction to payroll management and staff, including setting objectives, evaluating performance, and driving accountability Lead organizational design and workforce planning for the payroll function, including resource allocation and succession planning Serve as the subject matter expert and primary advisor to executive leadership on payroll-related matters Payroll Operations & Delivery Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for a multi-state workforce, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and data integrity Direct the administration of complex payroll elements, including multi-state taxation, garnishments, benefits deductions, and incentive compensation Ensure payroll systems (e.g., Dayforce) are optimized, maintained, and aligned with operational and reporting needs Evaluate and implement process improvements, automation, and system enhancements to increase efficiency and scalability Compliance, Risk Management & Reporting Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, tax regulations, and reporting requirements Oversee payroll audits (internal and external), ensuring accurate documentation and timely resolution of findings Identify and mitigate payroll-related risks through strong internal controls and governance practices Provide executive-level reporting, analytics, and insights related to payroll costs, trends, and workforce data Cross-Functional Partnership Collaborate with HR, Finance, Legal, and IT to support organizational initiatives, including acquisitions, system implementations, and policy changes Partner with Finance on payroll accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting requirements Support integration activities related to mergers, acquisitions, and organizational restructuring Act as a key stakeholder in enterprise system upgrades and transformations impacting payroll Additional Responsibilities & Miscellaneous Perform other duties as assigned to support Payroll and corporate objectives Qualifications Extensive experience in payroll leadership, including oversight of multi-state, high-volume payroll operations Deep knowledge of payroll regulations, tax laws, wage and hour compliance, and internal controls Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams, including managers and supervisors Strong strategic thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving capabilities Experience with enterprise payroll systems, preferably Dayforce Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel Proven ability to manage complex projects, drive process improvements, and influence cross-functional stakeholders
Compensation and Benefits:
Reports To VP of Payroll Compensation The listed pay range reflects the expected base rate for this position. Within the range, individual pay may vary based on experience, qualifications, and work location within state. This is a full-time position with competitive pay and benefits.
Base:
$160,000 - $185,000 per year
Bonus:
30% Target Bonus Total Compensation (Base + Bonus): The successful candidate could reasonably expect a Total Compensation Package in the range of $208,000 - $240,500
