About the Firm Tiret + Company, CPAs is a financial services firm in South San Francisco and Sacramento, California that helps individuals, small business owners, and medical and dental professionals achieve their financial goals. We specialize in financial planning, accounting, and tax planning and preparation, and we provide payroll services to more than 250 of our business clients. About the Role We are seeking a Senior Payroll Specialist to take a lead role in our payroll department. This is a senior, near-management position for someone who is already confident running multi-client payroll end to end and is ready to own the hardest cases, review the work of others, and help shape how the department operates. You will process payroll alongside the team while serving as the technical expert and escalation point, and you will work closely with the Payroll Manager on workload planning, client onboarding, and compliance. Duties and Responsibilities Prepare and process payroll on a daily basis Manage workflow to ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely, and in compliance with state wage and hour laws Process federal and state payroll tax deposits Process miscellaneous off-cycle checks, including final paychecks, severance, and similar items Timely resolve client and employee inquiries Manage employee data in the payroll system, including new hire set-up, changes, and terminations Process accurate and timely quarterly and year-end reporting (federal and state quarterly/annual reports and W-2s) Maintain vacation and sick leave accruals, 401(k) deferrals, payroll records, and reports Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation and enforcing adherence to requirements Prepare the annual workers' compensation payroll audit report for various insurance companies Demonstrate excellent customer service when communicating with clients and their employees Serve as the senior point of escalation for complex payroll issues, including multi-state payroll, garnishments, prevailing wage, and corrections to prior filings Review the work of payroll specialists for accuracy and compliance before transmission, and provide coaching and training to less experienced team members Own the onboarding and conversion of new payroll clients, including system set-up, data migration, and verification of prior-quarter filings Manage the departmental payroll calendar and assign workload across the team to meet processing and filing deadlines Research and interpret changes in federal, state, and local payroll legislation, and advise the firm and its clients on required changes Identify and implement process improvements that increase accuracy and efficiency across the payroll practice Support the Payroll Manager and act as backup during absences and peak periods Qualifications Five or more years of payroll experience preferred, including experience processing multi-client or multi-state payroll Prior experience leading, training, or reviewing the work of other payroll staff Strong working knowledge of federal and California wage and hour law, payroll tax deposit rules, and quarterly and annual filing requirements Able to prioritize multiple projects, goals, and deadlines Experience with ADP Run and Thomson Reuters Accounting CS software a plus Excellent verbal and written communication skills Able to demonstrate complete discretion and confidentiality Ability to work with team members at all levels
