  • $55,000 depending on qualifications Job Description The City of Chesapeake is seeking a detail oriented and customer focused Payroll Technician I to join the Public Works Department.
The Payroll Technician I is responsible for processing payroll, maintaining employee payroll records, ensuring compliance with payroll regulations, and providing exceptional customer service to employees regarding payroll and compensation matters. The ideal candidate will have experience with payroll processing, timekeeping systems, data entry, auditing, recordkeeping, and payroll compliance. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work with confidential information are essential for success in this role. Key Responsibilities Process weekly and semi monthly payroll using Kronos, Munis, and other payroll systems. Review, audit, and validate employee timecards, attendance records, leave balances, and payroll data for accuracy. Calculate wages, overtime, shift differentials, deductions, and other payroll adjustments. Maintain accurate payroll records and employee files in accordance with City policies and record retention requirements. Support employee onboarding, promotions, transfers, status changes, and separations by ensuring accurate payroll setup and maintenance. Respond to employee questions regarding pay, deductions, tax withholding, leave balances, and payroll procedures. Reconcile payroll reports and identify, research, and resolve discrepancies. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws, regulations, and policies. Generate payroll reports and assist with audits, record reviews, and payroll documentation. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of payroll administration, payroll processing, accounting principles, and payroll compliance requirements. Experience with Kronos, Munis, HRIS, payroll software, or timekeeping systems. Strong data entry, auditing, reconciliation, and recordkeeping skills. Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in a fast paced environment. Ability to analyze payroll data, identify discrepancies, and implement solutions. Strong organizational, time management, and problem solving skills. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism and discretion. Effective verbal and written communication skills with a commitment to customer service. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook. VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
Requires high school diploma or GED/HSE and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in accounting or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
