About The Role We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Analyst to specialize in the preparation and resolution of delinquent payroll tax filings. This role focuses on forensic reconciliation and the accurate filing of back taxes to bring clients into full regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate has extensive experience navigating IRS and state agency requirements for non-compliant employers.
Key Responsibilities Back Tax Preparation:
Prepare and file delinquent Federal Forms 941 (Quarterly) and 940 (Annual) for multiple prior tax years.
Forensic Reconciliation:
Review historical payroll journals, bank statements, and general ledgers to reconstruct accurate taxable wage data.
Amended Returns:
Prepare Form 941-X to correct previously filed errors and adjust tax liabilities.
Agency Resolution:
Respond to IRS and state tax notices, assist with penalty abatement requests, and manage payment plan setups.
Compliance Monitoring:
Ensure all filings adhere to the specific tax laws applicable to the periods being reconciled.
Required Qualifications Direct Experience:
Minimum of 2+ years specifically focused on payroll tax reporting. Proven track record in handling back taxes/prior-year filing is preferred.
Technical Proficiency:
Advanced knowledge of IRS Circular E (Employer's Tax Guide) and state unemployment insurance (SUI) regulations.
Software Skills:
Proficiency in professional accounting software and advanced Excel (data sorting, complex formulas, and reconciliation templates).
Communication:
Ability to clearly explain complex tax liabilities and resolution paths to clients or management.
