Higher Education / Academic Administration Overview We are seeking a highly experienced Higher Education Business Process Consultant to conduct a comprehensive operational assessment of key student-facing departments within an established nursing school environment. This consultant will evaluate current business processes, workflows, staff responsibilities, governance structures, and system utilization across Student Financial Services, Financial Aid, Registrar, Admissions, Recruitment, and Bursar functions. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in higher education operations and student services, with the ability to identify inefficiencies, uncover root causes of operational challenges, assess organizational readiness, and create a future-state operating model supported by detailed procedures, governance frameworks, timelines, and playbooks. This individual will work closely with executive leadership, department heads, and stakeholders to deliver actionable recommendations that improve efficiency, consistency, student experience, and organizational effectiveness while supporting the institution's broader transition to new SIS. Key Responsibilities Current State Assessment Conduct a comprehensive assessment of operational processes across: Student Financial Services Financial Aid Bursar Operations Registrar Services Admissions Recruitment Student Records Management Evaluate existing workflows, procedures, governance models, policies, communication methods, and departmental interactions. Assess staff roles, responsibilities, utilization, and operational effectiveness. Review current use of systems, tools, manual processes, workarounds, and custom procedures. Identify operational bottlenecks, process gaps, inefficiencies, compliance risks, and documentation deficiencies. Stakeholder Engagement Conduct onsite interviews and workshops with department leaders and key stakeholders. Facilitate discovery sessions to understand pain points, organizational challenges, and desired future-state operations. Gather feedback regarding timelines, service delivery issues, student-facing challenges, and cross-functional dependencies Recommendations & Future State Design Deliver a comprehensive findings and assessment report. Develop practical recommendations for process optimization and organizational improvement. Design future-state workflows that improve collaboration between Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Financial Services, and Bursar operations. Establish governance models, communication standards, escalation procedures, and ownership structures. Playbook Development Create a detailed operational playbook including: Standard operating procedures (SOPs) Role definitions and responsibilities Governance guidelines Annual operating calendars Timeline management procedures Student services lifecycle workflows Job aids and process documentation Cross-functional service level expectations Implementation Support Partner with leadership to socialize recommendations. Assist departments in adopting new processes and workflows. Provide guidance on operational readiness and organizational change management. Support alignment with ongoing Workday initiatives where applicable. Required Qualifications 8+ years of higher education consulting or university administration experience. Deep expertise across multiple areas of student services, including: Student Financials Financial Aid Bursar Operations Registrar Services Admissions and Enrollment Management Demonstrated success conducting operational assessments and business process reviews. Experience developing governance models, operating procedures, and institutional playbooks. Strong stakeholder engagement and executive presentation skills. Experience leading interviews, workshops, and process discovery sessions. Ability to present findings and influence senior leadership decisions. Strong documentation and organizational design experience. Proven track record improving operational efficiency within colleges or universities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Newark, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $80.00 - $90.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
