Frenchtown Charter Township is seeking a Part-Time Blight Inspector to help uphold the community's standards for safety, cleanliness, and overall appearance. This role centers on enforcing Township ordinances and State of Michigan regulations related to property maintenance, with a strong focus on resolving complaints, monitoring Board-directed priority areas, and supporting residents in maintaining safe and attractive properties.
The Blight Inspector plays a key role in protecting neighborhood quality and ensuring compliance with local ordinances. Working independently in the field, you will investigate complaints, conduct inspections, issue notices when necessary, and collaborate with property owners to bring properties into compliance. Previous law enforcement experience is preferred , as the role requires sound judgment, professionalism, and confident decision-making.
Overview:
The Blight Officer plays a crucial role in enforcing local ordinances and regulations related to property maintenance and aesthetics within Frenchtown Charter Township. This position operates under the framework of State of Michigan laws and guidelines, with a primary focus on addressing complaints and adhering to Board-directed areas of consideration, including but not limited to grass maintenance, building safety, and general aesthetics.
Responsibilities:
Complaint Resolution:
Respond promptly to complaints regarding blight, property maintenance, and aesthetics, submitted by residents, businesses, or other stakeholders. Conduct thorough investigations into reported issues, assessing the property in question to determine compliance with relevant ordinances and regulations.
Code Enforcement:
Monitor properties within the Township to identify violations of blight-related ordinances, including overgrown grass, dilapidated buildings, and other safety hazards. Issue citations and notices of violation as necessary, following established procedures and legal requirements outlined in State of Michigan laws.
Inspections and Compliance:
Conduct routine inspections of properties to ensure compliance with local ordinances, particularly in areas designated by the Board for focused attention. Work collaboratively with property owners to develop and implement corrective action plans to address violations and improve property conditions.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of complaints received, investigations conducted, and enforcement actions taken, in compliance with State of Michigan laws and Township policies. Prepare regular reports for Township officials and the Board, summarizing enforcement activities, trends in blight-related issues, and recommendations for improvement.
Community Engagement:
Educate residents and property owners about their obligations under local ordinances pertaining to property maintenance and blight prevention. Foster positive relationships with community members, stakeholders, and local organizations to enhance collaboration in addressing blight-related concerns.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Law Enforcement, or a related field preferred. Knowledge of State of Michigan laws and guidelines pertaining to blight enforcement and property maintenance. Experience in code enforcement, law enforcement, or a related field is desirable. Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse stakeholders and convey information clearly and professionally. Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
