Job Description
Director of Risk Management Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Risk Management to lead the development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive risk management and insurance programs. This senior leadership role is responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating enterprise-wide risks while optimizing insurance coverage, claims management, and loss prevention strategies. The Director will serve as a key advisor to executive leadership on risk-related matters, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective risk financing. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and leads a team of risk management professionals.Key Responsibilities Develop, implement, and continuously improve enterprise risk management frameworks, policies, and procedures to identify, evaluate, and mitigate operational, financial, strategic, and insurable risks. Oversee the organization's insurance programs, including property, casualty, liability, workers' compensation, directors & officers, cyber, and other specialized coverages. Negotiate terms, manage renewals, and liaise with brokers, carriers, and underwriters. Lead claims administration, loss control initiatives, and incident investigations to minimize financial exposure and prevent recurrence. Conduct regular risk assessments, audits, and scenario analyses. Provide recommendations to senior leadership on risk tolerance, mitigation strategies, and alternative risk financing options. Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, industry standards, and contractual insurance requirements, including contract reviews for risk transfer and indemnification. Manage the risk management budget, including insurance premiums, self-insurance programs, and third-party service providers. Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders across departments to embed risk awareness and support proactive risk management. Supervise, mentor, and develop the risk management team, fostering a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement. Monitor industry trends, emerging risks, and best practices in risk management and insurance. Recommend program enhancements as needed. Prepare risk reports, dashboards, and presentations for executive leadership and the board of directors.
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, Insurance, or a related field. Master's degree preferred. Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in risk management, insurance, or a closely related field, including at least 5 years in a leadership or director-level role. Demonstrated expertise in designing and managing insurance programs, claims handling, and loss prevention. Strong knowledge of insurance products, risk financing techniques, regulatory requirements, and enterprise risk management frameworks. Proven leadership skills with experience building and managing high-performing teams. Excellent analytical, negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and collaborate at all organizational levels.Preferred:
Direct experience working in an insurance agency or carrier environment, with deep familiarity of underwriting, policy placement, and carrier relationships. Professional designations such as Associate in Risk Management, Certified Risk Manager, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, or equivalent. Experience in a corporate, multi-location, or regulated industry setting. Proficiency with risk management information systems and data analytics tools.What We Offer:
