Job Description
S.D. Ireland Companies is seeking an experienced Director of Safety & Risk Management to lead our company-wide safety strategy across our heavy civil construction, quarry, ready-mix, concrete, paving, excavation, fleet, and property management operations. This is a senior leadership position responsible for driving a culture where safety is a core value—not just a compliance requirement. The Director will work closely with company leadership and field teams to strengthen our safety culture, reduce risk, and ensure every employee goes home safely at the end of the day. What You'll Do Lead and continuously improve company-wide safety and risk management programs. Supervise and mentor a team of Safety Compliance Officers. Promote a proactive, employee-focused safety culture across all divisions. Ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and other applicable regulations. Oversee safety programs for our quarry operations and ensure compliance with MSHA standards. Conduct jobsite visits, inspections, audits, and risk assessments. Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions. Develop and deliver safety training for employees and subcontractors. Maintain safety certifications, training records, and compliance documentation. Partner with operations leaders to improve safety performance and reduce risk. Oversee workers' compensation, insurance risk management, and fleet safety initiatives. Monitor safety metrics and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Stay current on changing regulations and industry best practices. What We're Looking For 8+ years of progressive safety leadership experience in heavy civil construction, paving, excavation, concrete, aggregates, quarry operations, or a related industry. Experience leading safety professionals or compliance teams. Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety requirements. Experience with MSHA regulations and quarry or mining operations preferred. Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills. Ability to influence both office and field personnel while creating accountability at every level. OSHA 30 Certification required.
