Job Description

Experienced Tax Associate CPA — 3-5 Years Experience Portland | In-office Founded in 1992 by an aspiring husband‑and‑wife team, Pacific Northwest Tax Service has grown into a trusted tax practice of approximately 20 professionals. Our client base is predominantly upper‑middle‑income individuals and families (salary/W‑2 earners and retirees), alongside closely held small businesses, with a growing number of high‑net‑worth and globally connected clients. If you want meaningful responsibility, direct access to decision-makers, and the chance to build deep client relationships (without feeling like a number), you'll fit in here. The opportunity We're hiring an Experienced Tax Associate CPA with 3-5 years of hands-on tax preparation experience who enjoys client work and wants to keep expanding their skill set. You'll own preparation of individual and small business returns, build planning instincts through real client situations, and expand your responsibilities in a collaborative, in‑office team environment. Our owners are Enrolled Agents (EAs) and Oregon Licensed Tax Consultants (LTCs). While we employ CPAs, we're looking to add CPA leadership so the firm can continue to evolve. Work arrangement This is an in-office role. We believe the best client service—and the fastest learning—comes from being together: direct client contact, real‑time collaboration, and day‑to‑day mentoring across the team.
Typical hours:
extended hours during tax season. Outside of tax season, our standard schedule is 35 + hours per week. Why a smaller firm? At PNW Tax, your work is visible and your growth is intentional. You'll work directly with experienced tax professionals (not layers of reviewers), get earlier client exposure, and have a real voice in improving processes. We keep expectations clear and reasonable because sustainable careers produce the best client service. You can expect busy seasons—this is public accounting—but we plan workloads carefully, communicate early, and pitch in as a team. You'll always know what "good" looks like and who to ask when you hit something new. What you'll do Prepare federal and state returns for individuals and closely held entities, especially S corporations (1120S) and partnerships (1065)—with exposure to C corps (1120) as applicable Support preparation of nonprofit and fiduciary returns as needed (990, 1041, 706) and learn the related planning and compliance considerations Support tax planning projects (entity choice, estimated tax, multi‑state considerations, SALT topics, extensions) Research tax issues and summarize conclusions clearly for internal review and client communication Work directly with clients to request documents, clarify questions, and keep work moving Contribute to process improvements in a paperless environment Assist with reporting foreign income and related disclosures as needed (e.g., overseas wages, foreign rental activity, foreign investment income, PFIC considerations) under senior guidance What you bring Active CPA license 3-5 years of recent, hands‑on public accounting tax experience preparing individual and small business returns Interest in taxation and desire to build strong technical fundamentals Comfort working with flow‑through entities—especially S corps (1120S) and partnerships (1065)—and how they impact individual returns
Helpful:
experience (or strong interest) in foreign income reporting and international information reporting associated with 1040/1065/1120S work
Helpful:
exposure to nonprofit (990) and fiduciary (1041) return preparation/review Strong organization, follow‑through, and ability to ask good questions Collaborative communication style with clients and teammates Experience with paperless workflow and tax software (we'll train you on our specific stack) Compensation & benefits Salary range (base) : $90,000 - $110,000 + (DOE) We're prepared to offer above‑market compensation for the right person (based on experience and demonstrated tax ability) Paid vacation and paid holidays 401(k) employer matching plan Health and dental insurance Continuing education support and paid time for CPE A smaller‑firm environment: faster learning curve, broader exposure, and direct access to leadership How to apply Send a resume and a brief note about (1) your tax experience, (2) the types of returns you've worked on, and (3) what you're looking for in a smaller firm. Pacific Northwest Tax Service is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
Pay:
$90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
Work Location:
In person
