The Tax Specialist (Sales & Use Tax) is responsible for ensuring accurate, compliant, and efficient selfassessed use tax and sales tax processes. This role partners closely with the business to apply tax rules correctly across systems, transactions, and jurisdictions, leveraging automation and data to support scalable growth.
Duties and Responsibilities Own the accuracy and compliance of selfassessed use tax, while supporting sales tax and GST obligations in a collaborative, customerfocused environment
Apply indepth knowledge of sales and use tax laws, including exemptions, across a wide range of goods and services
Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual U.S. sales and use tax returns and Canadian GST returns with accountability and attention to detail
Analyze large volumes of transaction data to identify risks, anomalies, and opportunities for process improvement and automation
Partner crossfunctionally with procurement, accounts payable, IT, and external vendors to ensure Vertex and Oracle correctly calculate sales, use, and GST tax
Manage and respond to vendor exemption certificate requests in a timely, serviceoriented manner
Research complex sales and use tax matters, including managed services, SaaS offerings, and marketplace facilitator rules, and clearly communicate findings
Support tax audits by gathering documentation, responding to information requests, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders
Perform testing in Vertex related to new software releases and changes in tax rules, ensuring agile and accurate system updates
Reconcile sales and use tax accounts, investigate discrepancies, and drive resolutions with ownership and transparency
Assist with system implementations, upgrades, and continuous process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
Required Skills & Experience 2+ years of experience in sales and use tax compliance, research, or related tax roles
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
Strong analytical and problemsolving skills, with the ability to evaluate large data sets using technology
Experience using tools such as Excel (including pivot tables), Power BI, Alteryx, or similar data management and analytics platforms
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Clear verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to business partners
Detailoriented, accountable, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fastpaced, technologydriven environment
Preferred Skills & Experience
Working knowledge of Vertex O Series and Oracle ERP systems
Experience supporting or leading use tax automation initiatives
Familiarity with sales and use tax implications for SaaS, managed services, and marketplace facilitator models
Prior experience in the Utilities, Energy, or technology sectors
Demonstrated passion for innovation, continuous improvement, and building efficient, scalable tax processes
