Job Description

The West Virginia State Tax Division is seeking an entry level candidate, who after training and development will primarily learn to examine and audit basic tax returns and other related documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with WV law. The incumbent will gain a basic knowledge of state tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements of various tax types. Regular tasks include verifying the accuracy of return filings utilizing well established rules and procedures; corresponding and communicating with taxpayers in writing or on the phone regarding issues and questions related to tax filings; learn to utilize the integrated tax system to accomplish everyday tasks along with other office computer applications; maintain strict confidentiality regarding taxpayer information. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated; have good written and oral communication skills; and, preferably, be familiar with Microsoft Excel and Google applications including Sheets and Docs. Performs related work as required. Performs related work as required. Employment requires a fingerprint-based criminal-background check to be provided at the West Virginia Tax Division's expense. Failing to initiate the process or cooperate with this process, providing false or incomplete information, or discovery of disqualifying information will result in denial of, or dismissal from, employment or denial of transfer irrespective of when discovered. The chosen applicant will also be subject to a tax compliance check.
Training:
Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree. The qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified as permanent.
