We're looking for a Tax & Accounting Manager — a high-capability manager who wants real ownership and a clear path to leadership. Someone who can step in and run with meaningful responsibility from day one, and grow into leading a team as we scale. The opportunity This is a high-ownership role across tax, advisory, and the full accounting cycle, with the support and systems to do it well. You'll work directly with the firm's owner and have real room to grow — into managing engagements, mentoring a team, and helping shape how we practice as the firm scales. What you'll own Prepare and review individual, business, trust, and estate tax returns Own the full accounting cycle for business clients — transactions, payroll, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial statements, primarily in QuickBooks Online Lead client relationships and deliver proactive, year-round tax planning and advisory Put AI and modern tools to work — improving how we do the work, not just doing it the old way faster Research technical issues and translate them into clear, actionable guidance As we grow: manage engagements, review others' work, and mentor junior staff Where this role goes We're hiring the person, not just filling a chair. You'll start hands-on, owning the work directly — and as the firm expands, the role grows into building and leading a team, with responsibility, influence, and compensation that grow accordingly. What you bring CPA license (or actively pursuing) strongly preferred 5+ years of public accounting across tax and the full accounting cycle Deep, current knowledge of federal and Montana state tax; comfort with complex returns Hands-on across the full cycle — bookkeeping, payroll, close, and financial statements — with fluency in QuickBooks Online A genuine willingness to learn and real enthusiasm for using AI to work smarter Comfort with a modern stack; we run Lacerte, QuickBooks Online, Ignition, and Karbon Sharp judgment, an ownership mentality, and clear communication — you can explain the complicated simply Compensation & benefits Base $95,000-$125,000 depending on experience, plus a performance share that grows with the book of client work you manage — total pay grows as you do, with a clear path past $200,000 as you move toward senior management A firm-wide profit-sharing pool that rewards tenure, teamwork, and mentoring others — we grow together, not at each other's expense Health, dental, and vision insurance Retirement plan A clear growth path into firm leadership On-site initially to build alignment; transitions to hybrid/remote based on performance and role needs Location & flexibility This role is on-site in Billings, MT initially, so we can build alignment and shared standards.
