This is a review-level managerial position for someone who already has experience overseeing tax work and mentoring tax professionals. The ideal candidate is comfortable handling complex tax issues, reviewing individual and business returns, advising clients on tax planning opportunities, and helping a team deliver high-quality work throughout the year.
Key ResponsibilitiesReview and oversee the preparation of individual, corporate, partnership, and multi-entity tax returns for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
Manage tax planning strategies for an assigned portfolio of clients, identifying potential tax-saving opportunities and areas of risk.
Serve as the primary escalation point for complex or unusual tax matters.
Supervise, mentor, and develop tax preparers and associates through technical guidance, training, and performance feedback.
Research federal and state tax issues and communicate relevant changes to the team and clients.
Translate changes in tax law into practical recommendations and guidance.
Assist with IRS and state tax notices, audits, and other tax-related matters as needed.
Work directly with clients on tax planning, tax questions, and more complex situations.
Partner with firm leadership to improve tax processes, workflows, and overall efficiency.
Help establish review procedures and quality standards that support accurate and timely tax preparation.
Provide technical support to preparers and associates throughout the tax season and year-round.
Required Qualifications5+ years of tax management, senior tax, or equivalent tax review experience.
Strong hands-on experience with individual, corporate, and partnership tax returns.
Active CPA or EA license, or currently pursuing the credential with a clear timeline toward licensure.
Demonstrated experience reviewing tax returns and mentoring or supervising junior tax professionals.
Strong knowledge of federal and state tax regulations.
Experience communicating directly with clients regarding tax matters and planning.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently while providing leadership and technical direction to the tax team.
Ability to work a hybrid schedule from the Mesa, AZ office.
Willingness to work extended hours during tax season as needed.
Preferred QualificationsExperience with CCH tax software; experience with other professional tax software will also be considered.
Experience with QuickBooks.
Previous experience providing direct tax planning and advisory services to clients.
Familiarity with trust and estate returns.
Experience working with complex or multi-entity client structures.
Experience improving tax department processes, workflows, and review procedures.
