Job Description
Tax Manager North Bethesda, MD $120,000 - $155,000 Most firms talk about work life balance during the interview. Then busy season arrives and suddenly nobody remembers the conversation. This firm built their entire operating model around avoiding that cycle in the first place. Not through gimmicks. Through planning. They actively manage workloads throughout the year so February and March don't become the annual collapse everyone simply accepts as "normal" in public accounting. And honestly, that changes the entire feel of the job. Why this role exists The firm is growing steadily and intentionally. Not reckless growth. Sustainable growth. They've got a clear plan to double in size over the next five years, but importantly, they hire before people become overwhelmed, not after. That means this role isn't about walking into a burnt out team and fixing chaos. It's about joining a firm that's trying to scale the right way from the beginning. What makes this place different The biggest difference is probably this: The people side of the business isn't treated like an afterthought. Every decision runs through the same filter: "How does this affect the team?" Which is why you'll find things here that most firms either quietly avoid or only pretend to offer. Unlimited PTO that people genuinely use Flexible working expectations rather than rigid hour policing Dedicated training and development time Clear progression conversations from the start Leadership that actively protects workloads Even the billing expectations reflect that mindset. Managers target around 1,500 billable hours annually, leaving space for mentorship, leadership, development, and simply being a human being outside work. The role itself This is not just a compliance management position. They're looking for someone who wants to become deeply involved in: Client relationships Tax planning Advisory work Mentoring and developing staff Helping shape the future growth of the firm Whether your background is broader generalist tax or more focused around High Net Worth clients and entities, there's room here to build something meaningful. And because the firm is still growing, visibility comes naturally. You're not disappearing into layers of bureaucracy. The culture This part matters more than firms admit. The co owner remains heavily involved in maintaining the people first environment the firm has built. And it shows. Collaborative atmosphere Team events people actually enjoy attending Open communication Merit based progression rather than politics or tenure People are encouraged to grow at a pace that matches their ambition. Not everyone wants the same career path, and the firm actually respects that. The interesting thing about the growth here This isn't growth for growth's sake. The leadership team understands something many firms ignore: You can't build a great client experience on top of exhausted staff. So instead of chasing every new piece of business immediately, they grow carefully and protect capacity first. That mindset tends to create much stronger long term environments. Who this suits You'll probably enjoy this if: You're tired of "busy season culture" being treated as unavoidable You want progression without sacrificing your entire personal life You enjoy advisory and relationship driven tax work You like mentoring and developing people You want to join a growing firm where your contribution is visible This feels much more like building a long term career than simply surviving another year in public accounting. What they're looking for CPA preferred Experience within public accounting tax Someone operating at Senior Associate or Manager level Strong technical skills combined with good people skills Someone collaborative, commercially aware, and growth minded Most importantly, they want people who care about building a strong team environment alongside strong client relationships. Not ready with a resume? Or want a bit more information before applying? That's fine. Apply the old-fashioned way, or simply reach out to me on LinkedIn or through the Distinct Recruitment website. I'll happily talk you through the role, the firm, and where it could take you before you make any commitments. I'm Abigail Stephen, Recruiter at Distinct. I don't just look at job specs; I look at people, and where they'll thrive. It's not about filling gaps. It's about finding a fit that lasts. Outside of work, balance for me is Pilates to reset, travel to explore, and skiing to recharge. Because the truth is, you don't slog through hours for the love of a spreadsheet. You do it for the freedom it buys you. Same principle here.
