Richmond, VA (in-office) Reports to: Director of Tax Services, STS About Us Sovereign Tax Services is the tax preparation and planning arm of Sovereign Advisors (SA), (SovereignAdvisors.com) a wealth management firm managing over $1B in client assets. STS delivers proactive tax advisory and planning, alongside tax preparation, to individuals, families, and business owners
  • with a particular focus on clients with complex situations such as equity compensation and multi-entity business ownership.
We're growing intentionally, and this role is central to that growth in the Richmond market. The Opportunity We're looking for a Tax Manager to lead our Richmond, VA office.
This is a hands-on role:
you'll personally manage client relationships and provide both tax advisory/planning and tax preparation services, while also managing a small existing team of preparers and administrative staff. Client work spans individuals as well as businesses across all entity types
  • S-corps, C-corps, and partnerships
  • including some fairly complex partnership and estate returns. You'll be the day-to-day face of the Richmond office, responsible for maintaining the quality of service our clients already count on. This is not a business-development role
  • our priority is protecting and deepening the relationships already in place, not chasing new business.
You'll report to the Head of Tax Services, who leads STS nationally. What You'll Do Personally manage a book of individual and business tax clients, delivering both tax advisory/planning and tax preparation Prepare and/or review returns across a full range of entity types, including individual (1040), S-corp, C-corp, partnership, and estate (1041) returns
  • some involving fairly complex structures Review and oversee tax returns prepared by your team, ensuring accuracy and quality before filing Manage and mentor the existing Richmond team (preparers and administrative staff), including workload distribution and workflow during busy season Serve as the primary point of contact for the office's existing clients, maintaining continuity of service through the transition Deliver proactive tax planning and advisory recommendations to clients throughout the year, not just at filing time Coordinate with SA's advisory team on shared clients, working within the firm's data-handling and compliance boundaries Maintain the office's operational standards•deadlines, documentation, client communication•during and after the transition into the STS platform What We're Looking For CPA required 5+ years of tax experience spanning both preparation and advisory/planning work, with demonstrated depth in individual (1040) returns Direct experience preparing or reviewing returns across multiple entity types•S-corp, C-corp, and partnership•including exposure to complex partnership and estate (1041) returns Prior experience managing or supervising other preparers or support staff Strong client-facing skills•comfortable being the primary relationship owner for an established book of clients Ability to work independently while managing a local office day-to-day Experience with professional tax software (Lacerte preferred, but not required) What We Offer Competitive base salary plus performance-based bonus Full benefits package The opportunity to lead an established office as part of a growing national tax practice Support from a broader firm investing in modern tax technology and proactive planning capabilities Sovereign Tax Services is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
