- Construction AccountingPosition OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting functions for an established construction firm.
The Controller will oversee all financial reporting, job costing, payroll, and internal controls to ensure accurate, timely financial information that supports operational and strategic decisions. This role requires hands-on construction accounting experience, strong leadership, and the ability to partner with project management and executive teams to drive profitability and compliance.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and manage the monthly and year-end close process, prepare and review consolidated financial statements and management reports.
Oversee job costing and project accounting processes to ensure accurate job-level profitability analysis and timely recognition of revenue and costs.
Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and bank reconciliations to maintain strong cash flow and working capital controls.
Prepare and monitor budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses in partnership with project managers and senior leadership.
Ensure compliance with company policies and maintain internal controls, including documentation and implementation of accounting procedures.
Coordinate and support external audits, tax filings, bonding and lender reporting, and other regulatory requirements.
Supervise, mentor, and develop the accounting team; allocate resources and establish priorities to meet reporting deadlines.
Maintain and improve accounting systems and processes; lead system implementations or upgrades and work with IT and vendors as needed (experience with Sage 100 is a plus).Provide actionable financial analysis and KPI reporting to support strategic decisions and continuous improvement of operational performance.
Support ad hoc financial projects, special analyses, and cross-functional initiatives as requested by the CFO/owner.
QualificationsRequired:
Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience with at least 3 years in a senior accounting or controller role, preferably in construction or contracting companies.
Required:
Demonstrated hands-on experience with construction accounting, including job costing, change orders, retention, percent-complete revenue recognition, job billing, and contract management.
Required:
Strong accounting skills and working knowledge of accounting processes (AR/AP, payroll, reconciliations, month-end close) and financial reporting.
Required:
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; professional certification (CPA/CMA) preferred but not required.
Required:
Proven leadership experience managing and developing an accounting team; strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Required:
Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with ERP systems; ability to streamline processes and implement best practices.
Nice to have: Experience with Sage 100 (installation, configuration, and day-to-day operations).
Nice to have:
Working knowledge of GAAP and experience applying accounting standards in construction environments.
Nice to have: Experience with bonding, lender reporting, and tax preparation for construction businesses.
