Job Summary:
Kan Herb Company has been providing quality herbal supplements to acupuncturists and other health care professionals and their clients since 1987. Kan began a new chapter when it changed leadership in 2022, and we are continuing our evolution by adding to our team with this position. The Controller will report to the CEO and own Kan's accounting and financial reporting function, including cost accounting for our manufacturing operation. Candidates for this role must have experience with COGS. The Controller will also own IFRS-based financial reporting used to support the annual audit of our publicly-listed parent company. This is a unique and exciting challenge and opportunity for the right person. This is an in-person role with no remote work and no travel required.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Own and lead the accounting function and manage the finance, inventory, banking, payables, receivables, production order, and sales order modules within Kan's Acumatica ERP system, including enough working knowledge of the manufacturing/BOM module to understand how component cost rolls into finished goods costs.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports; own month-end and year-end close.
  • Own cost accounting, COGS & inventory valuation, working in both Acumatica and Excel sheets to reconcile COGS for 1300 SKUs, and reconciling the two, including FIFO cost-layer tracking across multiple warehouses and management of inventory write-down/reserve accounting
  • Work with the CEO to build and track the annual budget, weekly and monthly cash flow forecasts tied to actual A/R and A/P due dates, and variance analysis.
  • Establish, document, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, including keeping the Company's existing Master Finance SOP current as processes and systems evolve
  • Manage all
AR:
invoicing, collections, credit memos, refunds, and customer communication on outstanding BBC balances, including reconciling Shopify and Amazon sales channel deposits
  • Manage all
AP:
approval and payment of invoices and disbursement of ACH transactions (we use Ramp for AP processing), and vendor terms.
  • Review and post payroll journal entries based on Gusto payroll reports.
  • Complete weekly bank and credit card reconciliations.
  • Perform monthly three-way match of inventory across Acumatica, the perpetual inventory ledger, and the general ledger to confirm valuation ties.
  • Handle workers' compensation reporting and premium payments, including the annual workers' compensation premium audit.
  • File sales and use tax returns, manage property tax compliance, and respond to IRS and state tax notices as they arise.
  • Lead the annual audit and tax compliance, and prepare IFRS-based financial reporting for our parent company.
  • Supervise accounting staff and support tax preparer CPA firm.
  • Perform other related duties for the Company.
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA a plus.
  • At least five years of progressive accounting experience, including time as a Controller or Accounting Manager, preferably in manufacturing.
  • Strong grasp of COGS, GAAP, cost accounting, and inventory valuation.
  • Knowledge of general financial and cost accounting principles, accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Experience with FIFO inventory costing and inventory reserve/write-down accounting strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on ERP experience required; bonus points for Acumatica, Shopify, and Ramp.
  • Experience performing three-way inventory reconciliation across a subledger, a perpetual inventory ledger, and the general ledger required.
  • Experience leading an annual audit and supporting tax filings, ideally including reporting into a parent or group entity
  • Tech savvy, including regular use of AI tools.
  • Proficiency in Excel is a must.
  • Experience managing others and building accounting processes is a major plus.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated.

  • Annual salary of $115,000 to $140,000.
  • Eligible for the Company's profit-sharing program.
  • Four-day workweek (Monday through Thursday), usually four 9-hour days.
